Seems hard to believe how fast time flies, but one-time Chicago driver/trainer Gene Vallandingham---a horseman in California for the past 30-plus years---turned 66 yesterday. Wonder if all that flowing blond hair that used to be his trademark is bleached blonde nowadays to hide the gray.....

maroon  I didn't like his driving back at Washington Park, and haven't liked it at Cal Expo.  Didn't he return to this area briefly several years ago?  At any rate Happy Birthday Gene--now hang up those driving colors.

It seems that he's too old to drive his horses (not all of his horses), so he's letting the other Alpo drivers (mainly Plano) to drive for him.

I think the stats show that he's still got it...

His two horses in NW events (stats from the last year):

Lead Me Astray: 37-2-9-8
Silver Rocket: 28-1-5-4

Just watch for those bike changes  Grin

Best,
EW

You're doing a good job so far keeping your real idenity under wraps. Sooner or later you will be busted out too like the rest. Then you'll be as silent as tonymfan is now.

To fully appreciate the unique character of the flamboyant Gene Vallandingham, you would have to have seen a particular race at Hollywood Park's night harness meeting in 1974.

Driving a pacer named Bobby Way, who was the second choice in the race at 3-1 (I remember, because I had bet him), Gene made a MONSTER brush going into the far turn to take the lead, quickly opening up a 5-length advantage, then 10, then 15! Past the eighth pole Bobby Way was about 20 lengths in front, still pouring it on as Gene rocked back and forth in the bike (as he was so fond of doing), when suddenly the poor beast went on a speed break and could never get back on gait again.

As the horses returned to the front of the grandstand afterward, Gene was greeted by a deafening choros of boos, catcalls and obscenities. Most drivers would have ignored it, but Gene wasn't most driivers.

Instead, he got out of the bike, turned toward the grandstand, doffed his helmet, blond mane flowing out from underneath, bowed at the waist like a stage performer, and began blowing kisses in the direction of the irate, screaming throng.

My immediate reaction was: I'll bet he wouldn't try this at Yonkers!

What a character!
