November 23, 2005

Just three days before she was to start in the Breeders Crown Championships, two-year-old pacing filly Little Miss K has shattered the small pastern bone in her right leg and will require life-saving surgery.

The daughter of Artsplace-Lady Mattingly trained a mile this morning and after stepping off the track picked up her leg, the Horseman and Fair World reports.

Trainer Erv Miller took the filly to the New Jersey Equine Clinic, where equine specialist Dr. Patty Hogan examined her.

"She's in a splint until Monday," owner Mike Gulotta told The Horseman today. "Her racing career is definitely over. My primary concern is for the horse's welfare. I would have liked to win a Breeders Crown, but the horse's welfare is first."

Gulotta said that prior to this morning's mile, trainer Erv Miller was confident that Little Miss K was in perfect health and ready for Saturday's Breeders Crown. "I talked to Erv this week and he was very confident she was going to win. He said she would mow them down."

Little Miss K will undergo surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, where the filly will have access to a pool and that can keep her from sustaining further injury after the surgery.

She won the $688,200 Shes A Great Lady Stakes at Mohawk in mid-September and was the richest two-year-old pacing filly in 2005, having won six of 11 starts
