Had an interesting chat with a patron at Lucky's today, asked for security. NONE.
Asked for GM. Did nothing and said call the Chief of Police.

Hmmmmmm no security at an Illinois licensed OTB facility.

I'll be back full time soon.

So you useless CRACKHEADS need to get your licks in now.

The Joliet OTB has NOT had any security officers in 4-5 years!  Maybe longer.

During this time managers have had to close up and deal with their cash on hand without any protection.

There has only been a few drunk patrons who needed ousting and one fist fight.

But the potential for managers being robbed without anyway to defend themselves is a liability I can't believe they accept.

All of the managers are women who can't fight their way out of a wet paper sack. No offense to these women. It's just a fact.

I can't remember ever seeing any security in any New York OTB.

Haven't seen any security at the Mokena OTB in awhile.  Maybe had some on Derby Day, but that's it.  Several years ago, there was always a security guard  (armed) on duty.

Probably not enough money at an OTB anymore for crooks to bother with. Much like how, if there's a terrorist alert red, probably the safest place to be is a racetrack.

Inquiring minds want to know why Eric needed to call for security.

Just placed a casual call downtown. Gonna give it a few daze.

Typical loudspeaker airhorn punter screaming and starting shit with everyone in the back room. He then started making threats.

Security is at Lucky's TWICE a week, but when?

We went a lot when it was new, but it was the other patrons like this one of emp's that finally made us stay away in droves. Some days the place would be just full of guys bellowing away at the screen, cell phones ringing at top volume and then guys hollering on those from the carrel behind you, loud and raucous arguments in some foreign language, nasty abuse of the teller, etc. At least at the track you can move somewhere else.

Would any casino put up with that nonsense of letting some patrons bellow, cuss, and swear at the top of their lungs and irritate all the others? I can't say I've ever seen that behavior tolerated in any casino. And what self-respecting bar or restaurant would want to add an OTB room if that's what it is going to attract to their building and OTB management does nothing to discourage it?

Drove by there last Friday mid-afternoon and the parking lot was pretty full, though.

I'm not sure who handles more money Joliet, Downers Grove, Arlington etc...

But the managers have to enter a code to get into the back room.

I'm sure there is a safe or money room that is secure for them to deposit their cash.

Trouble is if a guy or two with guns threaten the manager with their life that code will not protect that money.

Even the Brinks driver works alone when bringing money in and out of the OTB.

This is what happens when you don't treat people right.

You lose their business and your handle.

Looks like the onus is on each individual municipality and their local ordinances. All the IRB does is read their security reports...

Eric,

With respect to OTB’s, the statute establishes paramaters regarding the placement of an OTB (proximity to a church or school, registered voters, local prohibitions) but the statute does not address security.  The Board’s rules also do not address security at OTB’s.  However, OTB’s are licensed by the local municipality so you might check with the locals regarding security requirements associated with their special use permit.

Take care,
Mickey Ezzo

Irate customer asked to leave off-track betting facility

Niles police arrived at the Off Track Betting facility in the 9200 block of Greenwood July 26 at about 4:10 p.m., and an employee told them a customer was being loud and upset over a lotto ticket, and they just wanted him to leave, according to the report.

Police spoke to the 84-year-old customer, from Kenosha, Wisc., and he said he was upset because the business told him he had won $100 with the lotto ticket, and he believed he had won $1,000. He also wanted the ticket checked, not cashed in, the report indicated. The customer repeated numerous times that he had a heart condition and shouldn't be getting all worked up; police asked each time if he wanted to go to the hospital, but he declined. The customer also said he was upset because he didn't like the way the manager was looking at him and the fact he was being asked to leave. He did leave the business, police said.

No alcoholic beverages were involved in the incident, police said; however, they forwarded a copy of the report to the liquor commission.

Information is taken from Niles Police Department reports.

I went in there the other day and I noticed they had three tellers working. One of the windows was a $100 minimum window. What the hell is that about? I can't imagine that more than one or two guys in there is betting $100 bucks a shot with any regularity, so I have to assume they've set up that window for one specific guy. I guess that's their right, but it doesn't seem to be good business to put it out where it can aggravate all the $2 peons standing in the two long lines.

Also, the teller at the $100 should have some common sense. It takes longer to tell a guy he can't bet there than it does to just punch the ticket when nobody else is waiting.
