I honestly thought this article was a joke when I started to read it. If ESPN cares about Horse Racing at all, this guy will be let go. What a waste of space. Posted link from IPhone so sorry if it doesn't work properly off a desktop.                                http://m.espn.go.com/general/horse/story?storyId=9290147&src=desktop

i strongly disagree.
jay cronley is one of us horse bettors who plays the regularly and has strong opinions.i always read his columns and have exchanged multiple emails with him.
i also think he is the author of let it ride which was made into a movie starring richard dreyfus.

I don't mind him as a writer, but this article is ridiculous, which is why I'm thinking he's trying to get fired.  How can you tell people how dumb they are for letting Oxbow go off at 15-1, and bashing them for picking Orb? HE PICKED ORB! 'Orb's numbers were inflated by the mud' What numbers? This horse didnt have beyers that towered over his competition. The derby setup for this horse nicely and the Preakness looked like it would be the same. How Oxbow got away with :48 and 1:13 I'll never know... Then he goes off on some useless history he's had at Belmont Park. The article in itself is one of the worst things ever put on ESPN, and that's saying something.

if you are a regular horse bettor you have certainly called another bettor a *** or worse for plays they may or may not have made.

i still disagree about your opinion of the column.
the finley guy has written worse columns.

A lot of his articles strike me as barely lucid. But he's got a following.

'Walking the dog' as Brian W. Spencer would say.

You got that right; those fractions look like a claiming race.

I didn't find the article offensive at all.   After most races are over, I usually call myself an idiot for overlooking obvious clues.

Boring or poor writing, I would say he is guilty of that.   I didn't find him particularly interesting or offensive.

That's exactly what Stevens said:

"We came in here with a lot of confidence," added Stevens after his third Preakness triumph. "When I hit the half-mile pole, I said, 'Are you kidding me? Is this happening?' The race was over at that point. I just walked the dog to the half-mile pole."

LOL - show me one big race in history where the Jock isn't confident???  All of them were confident before the Derby and Preakness.  "I'm riding this horse in the Belmont but I know he has no chance"

I didn't find the content of his article offensive or even controversial.

Just hope he ages well, and his future contributions about our sport do not spiral down to complete incoherency.

I believe the horse went off at about 50-1 after being assigned 99-1 morning line.

I'm not 'offended' as a horseplayer but more as a reader. A dumb, lazy, pointless article. I couldn't have gotten that in to my college newspaper. It's been taken off the header on ESPN's horse racing page, so it looks like the editors listened.
