I was lucky enough to be at Belmont for one of Ruffian's early wins.  They guy I was with a gushing and awing about how great she was and I'm thinking, 'take it easy, she's just another horse.'

Then I saw her race.  All I can say is that I was priviliged to be there to watch her race.

Moral of the story:  try to be aware of unraced and UNNAMED horses at the flats (works usually listed under the dam's name).  Pletcher does this successfully a lot now, just as Jolley used to with a lot of late-namers who won as firsters, and as Whiteley of course did with Ruffian, who paid 4-1 first-time out.
