As if the nitwit who said it could EVER calculate or analyze odds properly..

Honorable mention:

Mine is someone touting the horse is home free and finishes off the board.
Another thing it is not an expression but  an action.  When you bet a horse and
the guy next to you is rooting for the same one  you might as well throw your ticket
away because they hardly win.

 Cheesy

"Speed tightener."

I've known a lot of trainers, standardbreds and t-breds and never once did I hear them say in sum or in substance that such-and-such had actually HAD a speed tightener.  But handicappers say such things all the time.

Bigger at the t-breds, but still encountered on the harness side:

"Looks like a lone speed!"

Sometimes it works, especially in small fields and on small tracks, and at shorter t-bred distances.  But much more often, someone else (jock or driver) reads the program or the DRF, and the supposed lone-speed gets cooked in a speed duel.

Hello LOOKING IN, here's the common origin of LEAD-PIPE CINCH. The figurative SENSE OF CINCH is recorded from the 1880s. This came from the saddle-girth meaning of the word, which itself had been borrowed from Spanish CINCHA in the 1860s. A saddle that had been tightly cinched was secure, so something that was a cinch was a safe or sure thing, an idea which developed into the slang sense of something that was a certainty. LEAD-PIPE CINCH suddenly appears in the early 1890s, only a few years after that SENCE OF CINCH had been created. Itís obvious enough that a lead-pipe cinch is one up on the common or garden variety of cinch, so that lead-pipe here is what grammarians call an intensifier. I hope this info helps!!!
