HERE'S PART OF IT.
THIS ARTICLE IS ABOUT 2 MONTHS OLD.

PLAINS TWP. - About 60 members of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 163 picketed outside Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on Tuesday.

Michael Kwashnik, the union's business manager, said the group is protesting the hiring of Missouri-based Killian Construction as general contractor and the Missouri-based Life Safety Group as an electrical subcontractor for the $50 million hotel and convention center project under way.

Few local union electricians were hired and the electricians who were hired are not being paid "standard wages and benefits," he said.

"They (the casino) are not paying area wage standards that we have fought for over 110 years," Kwashnik said. "They're paying below standard wages. Basically, they're lowering our standard of living."

Mike Bean, president and general manager of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, said while a few out-of-state contractors were hired for the hotel and convention project, about 95 percent of the workers hired are local and approximately 50 percent are union workers.

"When we built our current facility, we used local union labor," Bean said. "We're disappointed that they're taking this approach given the opportunities that we have given to everyone to bid competitively."

Kwashnik said their protest was not a union or non-union issue. He said it was about Mohegan Sun "bringing out-of-state contractors in and paying unfair wages and benefits" to local electricians.

He said the local electricians' union offered to work with local unemployed Native Americans on the project, but Mohegan Sun refused and hired the Missouri contractor.

Kwashnik said a Native American contractor bid on the project and didn't get the job, adding, "It's a little disheartening."

Bean refused to comment on the offer, but he said contractors were given the opportunities to bid on the project and Mohegan Sun "chose the most viable bid."

A total of 547 local union members have signed paperwork to boycott the casino, Kwashnik said. Local union members who were not hired for the project are among those who agreed to boycott the casino, he said.

"If they're not paying local people decent wages, how can they expect local people to come to this facility and spend the extra money?" Kwashnik asked. "People are going to pay their mortgages and put food on the table before they come up here and spend excess money."

I don't think there is much of a wagering public at that track.

Is he suggesting that the only reason that "people are going to pay their mortgages and put food on the table before they come up here and spend excess money" is because the union wasn't hired?

Shame on legitimate business-people using the most competitive bid for construction.

When you price yourself out of your local market you know the pendulum has swung too far, not that I care about the Mohegans.

Well, Missouri isn't exactly what they normally consider local in Pennsylvania, is it?

I think I saw Andrew McCarthy on the picket line.
He was afraid for the safety of his ears and doesn't want to be in a race with George Nap..

Vic, I think Mark Gingrich joined Andrew McCarthy so they could compare Nap's head moves.

Really?  Based on what you wrote on another thread, it sounded like you were making tons of money betting horses - a professional gambler who found a way to win virtually all the time.  You should have plenty of extra money for high quality "stakes", without thinking twice.

In fact some newbie thought you were so smart with horses that you should be a trainer.  Did that newbie get something wrong?  I am so confused.  dunno

Can anyone get me straightened out (besides Jessica Alba).

C'mon Vegas, fess up.  How much do you know of Brooklyn?  Did you play your first round of golf off the rock-hard fairways(?) of Marine Park?  Did you hit golf balls at Gerry Lauro's range?  Ever shop at King's Plaza?  Ever meet Ralph Kramden or Ed Norton?

Uh, oh...  geezer

I'm actually from Rockaway, over the bridge!
