If a horse breaks before the start and is back on stride before the word go is given 2 starts in a row, he has to re-qualify.

Even if he paces or trots the entire mile clean from go to finish line.

So in effect that portion of the start is officially part of the race.

Windows should close at the same time the official has begun.

If the horse is on the gate when they say "go" and did not interfere with another they are okay...  The race starts when they hit the start line.  They should be charted with an X before the start and past the recall post.  That will show before the post position on the program. If off stride at the start line it will be between the pp number and the horses position at the 1/4 pole..

I have never heard the starter say "GO". And I have driven in many many races..The official start time wise, starts at the start pole. But the starter has control of the field once he calls them to the gate...It's the judges decretion when to say a horse should be charted for a break before the start...Most will not chart a break if he's back onstride before the so called "recall" point is reached. If after that and two in a row then on the list he goes.

Fuzzypants-if he wins, the break is ignored: you are correct.

Remember, also, that breaks on "off" tracks are not counted in the two-time rule.
