If I had to get an actual job and couldn't spend my offtime betting horses or sports life would seem infinitely less worth living

At risk of further cementing the degen label, is it just me or does nothing get you as excited as your next large bet?

I do not think you have to be a degenerate to feel that way...I mean nothing compares.

Somebody told me years ago when Aqueduct closed for the winter, people wanted action so much that buses left from NYC to go to Bowie in Maryland. Of course that was before OTB and simulcasting.
Many years ago after the last race on November 15 the last day of the meet for the year at Aquaduct I was in one of the limo's to go home and a guy gets in and as he sat down he opened his NY Post and said "lets see what's on TV tonight till March 10th."

Sam, back in those days it's was miserable....so I was told.
No simulcasting, nothing....that's why the bus to Bowie, a 4 hour trip was the only answer bang head bang head

I never took the bus but I did go to Bowie by car. Later years there was Liberty Bell Flats which became Philly Park.
Back then you had to have a bookie to survive. I remember having $20 to win on Saul Nadler's Judgeable in the Donn Handicap when he paid $60. Around 1967.

The doubleheader was Bowie to Dover Downs. There were also winter meets at Rockingham and Foxboro. In 1973 when Monti closed for the winter my horse Getaway Pick raced at Rock. I used to make the trip from Brooklyn almost every time he raced. About 4 1/2, 5 hours each way.
