Formal Attire, trained by the 57-year-old Englehart, broke down Sunday and became the eighth fatality of the winter season in 28 days of racing. One of the fatalities was injured on the track but died five days later after contracting laminitis.

Instead, the 3-year-old gelding was placed on the Stewards’ List, which just calls for a timed workout for the stewards, which the horse did on Jan. 21, covering four furlongs in :50.04.
On Jan. 27, while entered for a lesser claiming price of $16,000, Formal Attire first passed a pre-race veterinary examination and was not observed to be lame and was allowed to race, fracturing his knee and later being euthanized.
