i sent the author an e-mail

the article mentions a total of $483 million in subsidies since 1993 yet failed to mention the $500 million license fees the racinos paid to get slots
no mention either of the role that $500 million played in capping all property taxes in indiana

After many months have passed that the OLG took slot money away from race tracks they come out and said they went about it the wrong way.  This article while it may have some valid points on where this revenue should go besides being a subsidy toward horse racing.  This author lacks any home work being done on the subject.  First and foremost like all racino's the revenue comes from a % from the casino owner.  NOT A SUBSIDY.  The tracks are paid a fee for slots to be used on their land.  He makes of no mention of jobs that have been created or tax revenue generated from all things horse racing.  Not a cent was taken from tax payers.  How about state government coming out and saying yes we have less money to work a budget than we had say 3-5 years ago.  We know have less money and don't know how to budget without cutting so we will raise taxes, take money from horse racing, or find other ways so we can keep our political jobs.  As far as programs go NY and PA have the best programs and yes Indiana has the best in the Midwest but they are the only state with slots at tracks.  Indiana needs to pump more money into there divisions for the right to reach the final like PA and NY.  Indiana breds are not grand circuit caliber horses so owning in Indiana just a few make money.  Sure the top horses rise to the top but there are many yearlings sold that are lucky to make any money.

That is one reason another the sires are also b and c.  Always a Virgin may be the real deal.  We will see on Swan for All.  Jailhouse Jessie back to Ohio I believe.  I received the Indiana stud book a couple weeks ago terrible for a slot infused state.  Especially with what has happen in Ontario and surplus of young studs out East.  Racing in for a rough ride next few years.  All the money infused into purses they should have built a pot to figure the Ill's of the sport so they could fix the game.  I agree with politicians from a business point of view they should be able to stand on all four legs.  Build a business model and go forward, fix your house with the cheating, increase your handle with a better product, reduce race dates, become fan friendly track owners, and try to encourage a way to bring in young bettors.

Rocco you have a lot to say for a guy who called and said you are never coming on these forums any more.  For the record I have owned horses in PA, ONT, IL, NJ, have a first time NY bred, and three first time IN breds.  So I race in about every state Rocco not sure why you have a issue with that.  I will go with your answers if you don't like what I have to say don't read it.  Not sure what all the negativity toward what I have to say.  True a lot of horses won't make money either they are not bred correctly, will have racing ailments, or don't have the heart.  Just saying programs out East favor a much better way to earn money than Indiana.  Indiana over nights nothing to brag about other than the top tier Inv. As far as Illinois goes I want to race where I live, my family enjoys the horses.  Watch a winner circle with Trot Fudge in the summer and all the kids around.  You may not get that since you do not have children that is fine.  For me it is all about family and fun just hoping to break even.

No state wants to subsidize this mess anymore.
Racing hasn't been a stand alone business for years now.
To buy into this business now seems foolish to me.
And to get into any business to break even makes no sense.
Once the slots are no longer tied to harness racing, and that day will eventually come, everybody goes back to the fairs and the $500 purses..
I love racing, but never did understand why the slots needed to be linked to the horses.

I'm not down on Indiana or I wouldn't have bought last year.  Just trying to show comparison in different states.  Yes Illinois may never get slots, then it goes to shit, OK, nobody will race here.  I don't mind Indiana would like to see better sires moved there but some went to Ohio.  Look I hope horse racing gets it figured out in all parts of the Country.  VicD the only way to tie in slots at tracks should only have come as a way to stay competitive with other gaming.  So if there are casino's in states then why can't a track owner have slots.  Then they can make a deal with the state and horseman for a split.  Look at the Illinois Racing Act nothing has never been done to stay competitive with neighboring states, to ensure breeding, they can't even ensure integrity.  I love horse racing just like everyone else always have but there are huge problems coming our way.  May be Ontario will show the way with slots gone and what a job Gural has done with the Meadowlands.

ITS NOT THE SIRES IN IND. ITS THE BROODMARES,,,,,,,THEYR 1 STEP ABOVE TRASH,,W/THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW,,,,,,,JUST LOOK AT THE YRLING PRICES,,,,ACTUALLY WHEN THEY SLASH THE SUBSIDY,,,,YRLING PRICES WILL BE AN ALLTIME LOW,,,,,,,,CHECK OUT THE YRLING PRICES OF NY BRED AND PA BRED,,,SEE WHAT YOU BUY FOR 10K

Don't mind me Rocco have had a few bad days of trading and for whatever reason bet basketball while waiting for the Supbowl.  What a mistake that was got me ass kicked that won't happen again.  One more game Sunday and done till September.  How are the babies doing?  Mine seem to be going forward all you can ask for at this point in time.  Late May for Qual's can't come soon enough.

One more thing....does anybody notice the pattern with these casinos?  Horse racing here first.  Casinos want in and say they will subsidy racing to co-exist.  Then turn the tables and want the competition eliminated and think it is appalling that states give money to racing programs?  What a joke!
