Bakin on the Beach in the 8th at M1, was roaring with pace last week, this week he's 2nd over and can't finish first or 2nd after getting carried around the track with  perfect cover. 9th race, Recent News, exploding with pace last two races pacing out of his skin, gets carried around the track with a gorgeous 2nd over and basically finishes last.

2nd over used to be an automatic trip to the winners circle, now, live horses get carried up there and just cant perform.

I can't figure it out.  bang head

I lost that bet, also.  But one thing for sure is, you cannot blame the trip.

You cant? Maybe you blame the driver for not makin enough speed?

Any horse can lose form after 2 tough races.

Leave him alone for the next few races.

So we're all clear...the horse was second up...and the driver didnt make speed? I have to believe youre blaming the wrong part of that combo.

The front half only went :57 2/5
Slowest half all night.
The last half was :55 flat.
Your horse was 4 lengths off at the half,
To win he has to come home better than :54 1/5.
How many horses came home in :54 1/5 or faster last night?
The horse raced great.
Play him again next week.
The slow pace hurt him and he still almost overcame it.

Good analysis Mr Burton.

A slow paced race can literally put the horses coming from off the pace on a treadmill.

Its one of my favorite excuses for a horse losing a race.

I'm sure you see these especially at Woodbine and Mohawk.
The 7/8ths lend themselves to those fractions often.
If you know when to excuse an effort (like the one in this thread) the price the next week can often more than make up for it.

Actually all big tracks such as Balmoral, Meadowlands, Mohawk and Woodbine are known for their slow paced boat races.

I just looked at the result sheet for the BigM for last Sat, and I found some real boat races in there.

The 1st and 2nd and the 8th were really slow paced races, Bakin on the Beach and Eric Carlson's horse Voice of truth made some really tremendous effort considering the pace of the race.

Speaking of Eric Carlson this guy has been putting up one bomb after another and the Meds crowd seems to be ignoring him. Perhaps you can shed some light on this driver.

I am very impressed with Carlson as well.
He drives what he has and hasn't messed up many races.
It's paying off for him.
Then there's Callahan who certainly knows how to make one go but doesn't seem to have much talent as a strategic driver. At least not yer.
Callahan is getting lots of live horses but has messed up quite a few races with cowboy antics.
When the one race a night that ends up going 52-53 to the half, you'll see Callahan in the mix.

I like what I see with Carlson.
Calm, thinking and not abusing any of his horses.

Callahan is acpmplish out east and had plenty of people giving him live drives thats why he's very aggressive! In the other hand Eric Carlson is trying to break through so he is tripping out these longshots and its paying off. Saying that Eric is a better driver then what people are giving him credit for. Trust me if he didnt have a good set and habds and brains guys like P. Smith & K. Rucker would of not given him a chance. Eric is their to stay.
