That's optional.

If the connections decide to put it in for the tag they can.

But no you cant just claim a horse in a reg race. Has to be a claimer.

Would be something if you could.

You have to try for a private sale with the connections.

You can if the horse was entered for a tag and scratched out of his last race and then goes into a conditioned race.

Depends on the state.  I saw it happen in Monticello years ago.  Eddie Palmieri claimed a horse out of a conditioned race in Monticello after the horse had been scratched out of a claimer in his previous start.

ps, it was The Chief's horse

Most states changed to this rule, to avoid making people bring horses to the track after they were scratched and claimed, so at least you get another shot to race the horse, but if you know he is being claimed you might as well enter the claimer, it is most likely a much easier spot, that is why it hardly ever comes up.

Not 100% sure, so that means I don't know !!
Usually, trainers drop in the claims right after the warmups, so I would guess about 1 hour ??

The answer to this is yes.  You can also claim out of qualifiers.

Call me and within 24 hours I will get you the price.  Cash only, of course.  All sales are final.  I'm surprised nobody else answered this correctly before me.

Is this rule only in PA--or does it apply in other States.

I know in PA--if you scratch a claimer-then enter it into a conditioned pace-it is eligible to be claimed at the price it was in for when scratched.

I spoke to a dozen horsemen yesterday--most were unaware of this rule.

Even if you take it out of State-it may not be eligible to be claimed(depending where you race it?)-but when you come back to Pa-it is still eligible to be claimed even if you come back after 2years!!!!

Did you also know that the reverse is true in some States--if a horse has had a long lay-off--and you enter it in a claimer at the same level as when it was turned out--it may be INELIGIBLE TO BE CLAIMED for 2 starts--even though it is in a claimer.

Just started this in Illinois for tbreds, it is to encourage owners to give time off to horses who need it. The horse is protected so you have a chance to earn back enough to pay for the layoff.
