The grandstand at Santa Anita on May 11, 1946, when a record $842,904 was wagered, an all time high in harness racing.

The runners held all the cards when it came to horse racing in California in 1946. Western Harness was given twenty-five dates a year.  Santa Anita got them one year and Hollywood Park the next. Finally, after twenty-one years of torment the legislature put the screws to the T-Bred folks and forced them to accept harness racing under the lights. So in November, 1968 the lights went on at Hollywood Park. One problem that came along with racing under the stars was fog. The $75,000 American Trotting Classic was called off two nights in a row because of zero visibility for fans and drivers alike. But the fog eventually lifted and Bill Popfinger’s Speedster mare, Lady B Fat, a $4,200 yearling purchase, won the ATC. And soon after, the great Overcall sent 2/5 favorite Best Of All into retirement with a loss in the APC.

Santa Anita got them one year and Hollywood Park the next.

Only because of the fire at Santa Anita were they moved to Hollywood in the 40s.

The $75,000 American Trotting Classic

The predecessor to the American Classic series was called the Golden West (T or P).
The Golden West Trot at Santa Anita had 18-horses go to the gate.
The Golden West Pace was won by Jimmy Cruise.

BTW Russ are you Joe Wink
