The operators of Gulfstream Park intend to begin an ambitious expansion of the facility early next year with the aim of hosting year-round racing and returning the Breeders' Cup to South Florida.

The development plan being formulated by The Stronach Group includes two hotels facing the track, greatly enlarged grandstand seating, as well as a stand-alone casino and adjacent concert hall. A giant statue of Pegasus will adorn a 4D theater nearby in a park area.

But here's the most surprising aspect of a project that will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to complete: Public money is not part of the equation.

"We don't look for any handouts; we look to run the business ourselves. This is an opportunity for Mr. Stronach to leave a legacy to thoroughbred racing, a sport he absolutely, positively loves," Gulfstream President Tim Ritvo said of owner Frank Stronach.

While Ritvo declined to reveal the cost of the renovation, Stronach is already heavily invested in Gulfstream, which he purchased in 1999 and sank more than $170 million into rebuilding.

Year round racing as in Calder totally out of the equation? Does Churchill know about this?

Stronach will get his BC
This guy is as ruthless at Trump- & wll step on anyone (calder) to get his way

I am down at Gufstream for a few weeks each year & really like what they have done with the area..Great restaurants, shopping  (to drop off my wife while I gamble).....Always thought the grandstand area was oddly constructed but sounds like they are gonna try & update it.

There is a great little area down by the first turn where there is sand, cabana type chairs...Kind of a little hideaway....My kids love it..never too young to learn how to read the form  thumbs up

I loved the old place, but I hear the new place is nice.  He only has 2-3000 seats now, so where is he going to put in the seats that you need for the BC?  Another problem is that it is warm and humid in Florida.  Not a great environment for horses with their winter coats already.

I know the Euros really used to hate BC's at the old GP.

Maybe this is all part of a Stronach plan to get a permanent lock on the BC, alternating between Santa Anita and GP. He'd finally have his annual "big event" seeing as how the Sunshine Millions has turned out to be such a fizzle.

Maybe you can expound on how the million was such a fizzle?

no different than warm and icky in so cal....if the coats r thick/longish - the horses are body clipped.....some than ran in so cal already were - i noticed esp the euros - ..most that race at aqueduck get body/traced clipped....same with all east coast winter tracks....and horses shipping to fla/fairgrounds for races  are usually clipped if they stable in colder climes and have not been in a warmer one long enuff to shed out -when we showed at HITS in fla- we body clipped before we left - horses were there 6 wks - so they grew in a nice , shiney short coat - the few 'non growers' - its' a lie -we didn't clip - didn't shed as readily...ended up body clipping once there anyway

Florida is a lot more humid.

But whatever. The fact remains the Euros used to complain long and loud about the Florida BC's and stay away, and they never seemed to have that problem with So Cal, so what do they think that we don't know?

True...that run into the first turn comes fast..

For a horse to win from 9 or greater barrier at that track- has to be a career effort.

IIRC it was the heat and humidity. But it was so long ago.

I think it would be a great idea to have it at Gulfstream. Enough of Santa Anita and Churchill Downs.

Frank's main track is GP now.  He will be there in full strength.  Luis Ramierz and Kirk Ziade are his Florida trainers.  Maybe Danny Miller will have some since he is at GP too.

Do you know who is riding first call for him Dan....

I know Joe Rocco rode some last year-  He was my "rookie" of the year at GP last year...Did some good things & some prices..
Always seems like there is 1 jock that flies under the radar & gets hot each meet.

Remember 2 years ago Orlando Bocachica was scoring on some turf bombers!

I am not sure he has a first call rider right now.  Manoel Cruz has ridden a bunch for him.  I think Orlando Bocachica has also ridden a few for him.  Friday, he has Rocco and Saez in the saddle.

He ruined the track now he wants to rebuild it? Must be churning heavy dollars in that casino to spend all that money to use the new seating for about 4 hours a year

it is going to be hard to charge bc ticket prices and expect these people to sit in the bleachers on benches

imo cd bel and sa should be rotated every 2 yrs and toss in woodbine every 6th yr
no one else that i am aware of has the facilties to handle the crowds especially with bad weather
