How are the bread and butter trainers going to stay in business? with the virus problems, small purses and lack of business it seems that they are going to struggle to continue. I look at some of the stats and its hard to see how they have lasted this long. Look at a Campbell or Liane Davis and many similar.. Feel bad for them with all the bad things going on.

We cut the barn size from 24 in May to 8 in November.  Maybe we will have 12 in the Spring, but can only keep the ones that show good promise or get checks.  Had 7 babies last year---2 this year.

Were you able to sell them to other trainers or are their racing careers over?

Also for the original poster, Hawthorne purses don't seem small to those of us who are used to the Fairmount Structure. My filly finished 2nd in an allowance race last week and made almost as much as she made when she won an allowance race at FP.

Several went to pleasure riders.  Actually had good success on Craigslist, though many were tire kickers.  Several were sold for $750+ thereby clearly avoiding a trip to the slaughterhouse.  I also sold a couple on the cuff.  Got the cuff money for one.

This is interesting to me. Tell me a little more about how you arranged this, if you don't mind.

I use too have 4to 5 in training almost all year.
With purse cuts as an owner I can't kelp that many in traing now only two to three .
I feel so bad for the trainers and do what I can but if I can't give my horses quality care with an opportunity to race for good purse money it just doesn't pencil!

Have bought and sold a few this way.  Just mark a bill of sale as cuff and state how you will be paid or will pay.  You can do it based on future earnings for a future win only or based on any money earned.  I sold a cheap one for the first money earned and made it back on 3rd and 4th.  The bookkeeper paid me from the buyers account.  I bought one for $1k on the cuff payable 1st through 3rd.  She is still a maiden but I paid her off from a second and third.
