End of season attrition has gripped the sophomore pacing division. ARNRD, Kingcole, Michaels Power, Sweet Lou and Dapper Dude are just a few of the 97 colts staked to the Matron who will not be lining up at the starting gate on Sunday.

Heston drew the six in the second elimination. He takes on Windy City winner Pet Rock—just inside of him—Messenger winner Bolt The Duer—two hole—as well as Mel Mara, Easy Again, Hillbilly and Escape The News.  This is quite a bit more challenging than the first elimination.

That one has Thinking Out Loud, who came from off to get second in the Progress, on the rail and Bettor’s Edge in the three. The rest of the field consist of: McErlean, I’m The Pied Piper, Shady Breeze and Major Bombay.

All the talk about this could be the best crop ever turned out to be a joke...Sweet Lou was supposed to go undefeated  laughing guy laughing guy.  While the crop IMO was just average, nobody sticks out as the undisputed division winner.  I guess Heston Blue Chip wins by default.  Everybody was saying they were going to break the world rercord of Somebeach and i  laughing guy laughing guy laughing guy.  We didnt get a chance to see a standout performer this year IMO. The closest thing was Chapter 7 in limited starts and TO DREAM ON in limited starts...No Somebeaches as those come around once a bluemoon. Sweet Lou provided EXCELLENT value to everybody who bet against him in all the big races.  trophy trophy

It’s not a whole lot unlike last year. None of the contenders overwhelmed the competition. RWJ won the division off of wins in the Pace, Messenger, Battle and SBSW. This isn’t exactly a powerhouse resume. Cheddar was the primary contender off of wins in the BC, Cane, Am-Nat and Windy City. Again, the two Chicago stakes don’t traditionally count for much in the battle for division supremacy.

BBJ won the Jug, Bluegrass and Holmes. UTC won the NA Cup, Simcoe and SBSW. Alsace won the Adios and Tattersalls.

That’s kind of what happened this year, with none of the better colts having more than three open stakes wins.

You have to go back to RNR Heaven to find a dominant force in that division.

I actually liked the fact that there was no standout.
It was competetive, exciting and bettable all year long.
Who will be the three year old pacer of the year?

Heston Blue Chip is 1-9 if he wins the Matron...probably 3-5 if he doesnt. IMO
