Stallion retirement restrictions in effect in 2013
November 15, 2012
A restriction in the conditions of stakes races serviced by the Meadowlands, Tioga and Vernon Downs and Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) tracks regarding the breeding of stallions under five years of age goes into effect for mares being bred in the 2013 season.
The restriction states that foals of 2014 sired by stallions which were foaled in 2009 or later (4 year olds or younger in 2013, the year of the breeding) shall not be eligible to stakes at the above tracks unless they meet the one of exemptions listed in the conditions.
This condition has been included to ensure the stars of the sport remain on the track to attract fans to racing, rather than disappear into the breeding shed.
Clarification of the restriction and/or application for a waiver are available by contacting Nick Salvi at
nsalvi@tiogadowns.com or (607) 972-5500.

Last year Roll With Joe, Big Bad John, Up The Credit and Big Jim retired. UTC is apparently racing and breeding, but the others are all gone. Broad Bahn and MOMM also retired to stud. Daylon was retired temporarily but came back when he failed his fertility test. Pastor Stephen, who was recovering from a broken coffin bone, disappeared. Not sure what happened to him.
Michaels Power, Dynamic Youth, Bettor’s Edge and Intimidate are all geldings who should give the open classes a boost. But it would also help if Market Share, Goo, HBC, Sweet Lou, Bolt The Duer, ARNR Dance and others stick around. We need more quality racehorses a lot more than we do a few more middle of the pack stallions.
It doesn’t seem like the connections of any of the top colts have been setting their charges up for medical waivers.
