Legislation approved last week in Michigan's state house is a step in the right direction for 'historical racing' or 'instant racing' to become reality at state racetracks, but according to a report, the movement still has an uphill battle to fight.

An article by mlive.com explains that the bill was passed by a vote of 91-16 last week. Even though the bill will have to fight for its survival in the Legislature, it could then have to be passed by both state and local voters due to a 2004 constitutional amendment.

“The race-horse industry has been kind of basically thrown under the bus since the casinos have come into our state. They’ve been unable to go into the modern era of doing some of the modern things to bring more people into their businesses,” the article quoted Republican Rep. Kevin Daley as saying.

The report also states that opposition to the move could also come from at least one Indian Tribe that currently operates a casino.

Very good news for Michigan harness but the casinos will def try to crush it when it reaches the Legislature.

Michigan has been notoriously strapped for cash since the 80s & relies on tax revenue from the casinos. They call the shots & are unwilling to even share crumbs with the racing industry. It's obscene.

In the 2004 re-peal, the Casino's (both Indian and in Detroit) put more
money in repealing the VLT, than was spent on the 2004 Presidential-Election-within-Michigan.

Crazy, isn't it?

There are 20k+ Michigan jobs related to the horse & racing industry but because they're scattered, it's an extra struggle to find a singular voice when they have to go up against the casinos. Lord knows they're trying but it's like the ant vs the elephant.

There may[/b have been 20k jobs (that seems really high to me) in 2004, however there can't be one-third of that today.

The exodus of people is only going to get worse with Windsor Raceway and Sarnia shutting down. Mich horsemen been heavy participants of those tracks.

With Raceway Park moving to Dayton, will pinch all those southern-Mich horsemen that have been racing in Toledo for decades.

There used to be two harness tracks in Michigan all year around.
These days there are almost four months of no racing, and no pari-mutuel harness tracks race simultaneously.
