Sorry Gural and Big M haters...

The first columns of steel have been raised for the new grandstand at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

The 155,000 square-foot building, expected to open in late 2013, is the integral part of track operator Jeff Gural's plan to reinvigorate harness racing at the Meadowlands.

Approximately 50 pieces of steel a day will be set between now and mid-February 2013, the estimated topping off date, for a total of 2,200 tons. Two dozen tradesmen are at work daily on the project under the management of LPCiminelli.

Fans and horsemen will be able to watch the new grandstand's progress over the course of the 2013 live racing season, which begins Friday, Dec. 28, 2012. Racing is slated for three nights a week, Thursday–Saturday, through March 16. The schedule then reverts to Friday and Saturday until the Championship Meet finale on Hambletonian Day, Aug. 3. The 2013 season will also mark a return to racing in November and December. An official racing calendar will be released later this month after NJ Racing Commission approval. (Meadowlands)

Mr Dalrae......Please dont bring your negativity to the new meadowlands..... we have enough of your type sitting on the far left side of the grandstand....grumpy old men......  new fans to the sport could care less about better horses.....they want a sexy atmosphere as well.... the great horses will be there in the summertime...just like always......

Great Job Jeff and team !!    thumbs up

The old facility will be used until the new one is built....

Fuzzy, and others who have never been to Tioga: Tioga is a great track, and one of the nicest and well run tracks I have been to in 20 years.  beer thumbs up trotter
Many years ago I used to go to Tioga when it was a quarter-horse track. It then closed for many years and sat on Route 17 in total deterioration. I wished for it to one day open again, and when it did, I make sure I get there whenever possible.

Due to the BS with Atlantic City the slots will wait but they will start taking sports plays very soon. That will bring in alot of $$$$ and plenty of new players too.

The New Grandstand will be beautiful. 2013 will be the same purses as 2012. The new OTW has not perfomed like expected. Sandy has hurt the simu #'s. Gural & his investment group will not pump big $$$ into purses this year.
It will be a new era in 2014 & i look foward to it. Jeff Gural could be harness racings last savior.

Although they have a few benches, many old school people still bring their own chairs. Sad thing is that last time I was there (month ago), must have been 20-30 people there---tops...

I used to sit in the Renaissance room. I had a tiny tim at my table and didn't care how long or slow the windows were. I could see the race out the window or watch on the tv screen. I used to love the place.

With this new grandstand accommodating 5,000 customers. I'm curious if they have a plan for the Hambo? Should be interesting.

Super Bowl series underway; handle up again

Return Home

January 10, 2013

 | Print View

The popular Super Bowl series for trotters got underway Thursday night at the Meadowlands with four divisions making up the first leg. Coming into the series, it appeared that Andy and Julie Miller held a strong hand and the night produced mixed results for "Team Orange Crush.”

One of the Miller trainees, Windsun Galliano, made a break at the start, allowing Joyeaux Dream to go all the way on the lead, winning by three lengths in 1:55.4 for Tim Tetrick. But soon after, Helios would prevail for Andy and Julie Miller, holding off the fast closing No Less than Magic, winning in 1:55.3 (the fastest of the four divisions).

The first division of the night went to the very impressive Where To Hanover, who grinded his way into the race, chased down the longshot leaders and drew clear to a convincing victory, winning by four lengths in 1:55.4.

The final division was captured by Wisenheimer, prevailing by a nose after a fierce stretch battle with Take It To None. The win was one of three on the night for driver Dave Miller and was a popular win for trainer Jenny Melander, who won two under saddle races in 2012.

On the wagering front, make it six race dates in the books, with all six race dates showing gains from the previous year. The Thursday night card generated a total handle of $1,837,170, an increase of 5.4% from the same Thursday night in 2012.

Racing resumes Friday, featuring The Clyde Hirt Series for pacers with post time at 7:15 P.M. For more information, go to meadowlandsracetrack.com. (Meadowlands)
