What's your opinion?  Post who you would vote for and why.

I think there are many deserving candidates but I lean Wise Dan as he has done it on multiple tracks and surfaces.  Tough to knock his year.

Tough to argue those three.  If Point of Entry had won it would have been 4.  What about I'll Have another?

1.  I'll Have Another
2.  Wise Dan

Honorable mention (but not on par with the top two):  Royal Delta, Fort Larned, Little Mike.

I can't support any three year old that is retired by The Belmont.

This year's 3 yo crop was suspect, at best. I'll Have Another beat no one of consequence. He can't possibly be given consideration for HOY. It's between Wise Dan and Royal Delta, IMO.

I thought it was a pretty good group of 3yos (at least while they were all still around).

Wise Dan should certainly get credit for year-long performance and versatility, but he was only HOY-quality at a mile on grass.  Otherwise, he was really good but not a HOY candidate.

We didn't really have any all-time great type horses this year.  There were a bunch of really good horses, but they all had flaws or limitations.

...they all had flaws or limitations.

Wise Dan was a short nose away from being undefeated on *any* surface this year, all in graded stakes; casting him as a "turf miler" is disingenuous: he has 5 wins on synthetics out of 7 lifetime attempts, and he has won at distances from 6 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles throughout his career.

Wise Dan is a versatile, tractable, proven champion -- to say that he has "flaws or limitations", while touting relatively lightly accomplished I'll Have Another for HOY, makes me wonder if you aren't missing the big picture of what goes into deciding an Eclipse award winner. JMHO.

Zenyatta. She deserves it just as much as she did when she won it!

I think you missed the sarcasm, fuzzy.

What I believe Earl means is, there is about as much justification for giving HOY to Zenyatta THIS year (i.e., *none*) as there was the year she actually won it.

Pretty damn sly there, Earl.  thumbs up

Fair enough.  He's a legit G1 horse on any surface, from about 6-10 furlongs.  That's not very flawed, and I guess I'd have to put him ahead of IHA.   But I don't think he's a true champion except at about 8-9 furlongs on grass or poly.  That's not much of a limitation, since that's where a ton of the big money gets handed out, but he's one-for-five lifetime on fast dirt.  Somebody on one of these strings said he/she thought Wise Dan would have won "any" of the BC races, but I don't think he'd have had much of a shot at the Sprint or the Turf, and I have my doubts about the Classic.

It appears Wise Dan will get Horse of the Year honors.  The media poll at America's Best Racing has had him the top choice for the last month or two. Scroll down to mid-page under the heading "Tops" to see the latest poll:

For some reason, I didn't like Wise Dan which does not make sense because he's by a very modest sire and trained by a guy who is unsung... two good things. I guess the mile division looked weak to me this year. You know it's probably a weak year when Animal Kingdom runs second with his $36K in prior turf earnings. I love Animal Kingdom but he's not an established world class turf miler.  However, if you look at Wise Dan's  success on all surfaces... you look at the entire resume, he is solid. He has three Grade 1s, one Grade 2, and one Grade 3 wins.

It is interesting that nobody will ever mention Groupie Doll who has three Grade 1 wins and two Grade 2 wins. She won her last five races to finish out the year. She would have to run against the boys to get recognition.

I'll Have Another is a tricky one.

I think for Horse of the Year, I think Wise Dan, Groupie Doll and Royal Delta certainly got to be in serious conversation for it. I think itís tough but could it be a female again? The more I think of it maybe Wise Dan will get it done.

Is Morton Fink from Chicago?  Back in the 90's, he was at Trackside when you couldn't get real time race information from anywhere else.

Think so, he owned many nice IL breds in the 80's.  Lou Goldfine was his trainer at one time - Princess ZEN.

Morton Fink is indeed from Chicago, and woul spend many afternoons at Trackside, when the restaurant was called "Ditka's", what a surprise in 1987?  Goldfine was indeed his trainer, the two had a common connection, if you know what I mean....OFO
