What Pete MEANS is that he's trying to CONVINCE HIMSELF that Derek has no shot but i'll tell you what, If Jeter wants to break this record, he will be able to break it. Jeter is a huge box office draw and if the Yanks dont want him, someone else will, he can play DH in this league until he's almost 50 years old if he wants to, someone will pay him something to play....especially since he will be somewhat close to the record. If Jeter is 43 or 44 with very diminished skills and he's 200 hits away from the record (hypothetically) and the Yanks dont want him anymore (hypothetically) dont you think some other 'out of contention' team will say "geez, lets give him a 2 year contract and we will milk this thing to the end"

Its up to Jeter, Pete just has to hope he doesnt care about the all time record.

nearly 1000 hits isnt something really all that close for Jeter. I mean its a SERIOUSLY GOOD year to have 200 hits. Thats 5 outstanding hitting years at an advanced age....so as you say, unless he plans on hurting his incredibly positive image and legacy, which I dont, I cant possibly see him getting that many years in.

I think you make great points, but, are people really going to criticize him for playing a few extra years to get this record? Its kind of a slippery slope, if he absolutely forgets how to hit and is really hanging on at 46 or 47 that's one thing, but if he's 44 and is still somewhat productive, even for a non contending team, and he's close, i dont think people will have as hard a time with it. People know Jeter's love for the game is well documented and the bottom line remains that if some team employs him, that means by definition he's good enough to play in the big leagues, i have no problem with it.

Got a pretty good Pete Rose story, remember hearing Norm Van Lier during a Bulls broadcast talk about a time when he was playing a road game against the Cincinatti Royals, it was a blow out and pretty much everyone but the gamblers was disinterested.. But then Pete stands up floor side and yells "C'mon Norm! We need some points!!" indicating he most likely bet the over

Yes your right he would hit 240 homeruns in a season off pitchers with 5.88 era's that would be in single A ball in his era.

It might not be the way BASEBALL works, but it sure as hell is the way ENTERTAINMENT works.

If Derek Jeter is 45 and 'washed up' and is 150 hits away from the record, and its March and Derek says "i want to come back one more season" you are telling me that no team will sign him to a 1 year deal? Zero teams?

It must be tough for non Yankee fans to accept the truth.
Jeter has won more Series rings than the degenerate gambler from the Reds.
That's a fact.
Another fact is Jeter has more class in his sack than the degenerate has in his entire miserable body.
Jeter seems to have a few more fans also.
Seems to be a pretty good looking guy as well..
Jeter probably doesn't give a small shit about what that degenerate ***hole has to say about him, and the degenerate WAS a great player, just didn't have too much character..
As for his autograph, you could use it to wipe certain things.
