It is amazing in this ecomony that some tracks have increased both....  It shows that people are looking for new types of excitement and will wander into a harness track.... It's up to the track management to make sure they come back the following week.    I love the harness races but to be honest I will find myself in a casino because I get free drinks...and there are alot of people around having fun....The track is exciting...but lets face it.....  people want to be part of a crowd....    If the track only has 50 live patrons watching a race....what the hell is that?Huh     I would not come back....     Tracks need to become "flashy" and "sexy" ...   I am sure the "all stars of training and driving" have huge "flashy" houses because of the sport...   The tracks need to invest in atmosphere....  How about putting neon lights around the tracks oval?   the track is just not inviting.....   people are looking for the nest best thing in gambling....   harness races are very exciting...  but is the track atmosphere itself exciting???    hmmmmmm

A couple of points on this subject:

Yonkers does not offer free drinks in the casino. At the craps and roulette tables you have to bet a minimum of $10 a roll or spin of the wheel. You literly can drop $100 in 10 minutes at the roulette table, and they won't even give you a free drink.

Also, when you stand outside on the apron at the track, you see so many casino junkies coming outside to get fresh air and smoke a cigarette, cigar, pipe or joint, and they always make a wager on a horse while they are there. It happens all night and I know this because I stand there all night. So many people will come up to us and ask , " who do you like?"
The casino is also a great way to increase revenue for the tracks , if they could just find a better way to get them more interested. Yonkers gets about 20,000 people a night coming into that casino and they are all about 30 yards from the track. Someone has to find a way to get them to gamble on the horses as well and you will see a dramatic increase in handle.

On the other hand , the Rooney's don't care about horse racing anymore.
Sorry for the slight derailment.

Great Points Racepony....  It seems the fans are more interested in saving our sport then track management...   thats the problem....   The rich will get richer...  and the average better will continue to get frustrated about the credibility of our sport and the weekly news about the same drivers and trainers winning huge races .. and rumours about juicing...yada yada yada,,,,,  unless some huge dramatic changes in our sport happen.....it will be groundhog day ....year after year.......

Asians are huge gamblers in the casino....    but I never see any wander into the harness arena....   Has anyone asked any asians why they wont bet on harness races?    I bet we get some interesting answers....    I will ask some next time I go to Parx casino.... they dont have harness.....but I will ask if any have heard of the sport....    Not being racist at all....   just interested in other cultures opinion on harness...   We are leaving tons of money on the table.....   racepony is right....

If there were less tracks racing there would be increases, because (as everyone points out) there are some (if not a lot) of hardcore horse players. The facts will remain, people DO bet good racing and on BIG event type nights. Granted, not every Saturday can be a Hambo, or Breeder's crown kind of night, but by the same token, if a race secretary actually cared enough to write races and care enough to put the best possible races forward, things would look up. Another MAJOR factor is all the 3 turn tracks that currently dominate the purse structures...Pocono, Chester, Dover ETC....I strongly dislike half mile racing, but 5/8's is even worse. Racing does need less tracks, more full fields, and more big nights.

Scarborough broke the 32 people mark for 3 race dates this year. Glad to see the marked improvement
