A short study on bleeding, for perspective.

http://www.scef-inc.com/bayly.html

And, From what i read, bleeding is genrally and most likely caused by high blood pressure forcing blood into the lungs.

Not allergies, or infections or etc, .  Sure, it is "performance enhancing" over horses with blood in their lungs!  it has side effects, like it has in humans, I suppose; side effects that can be counteracted (short of RETIREMENT!) by diet or supplements.

Dr. Lyons is on an anti-lasix crusade and is preparing a large study involving thousands of racehorses.

She also said horses perform better because "they weigh less" but then goes on to say "it's more like doping".  It is?  Well, which is it, weight or,,,doping? anyway?

One more thing, one question.  Are European horses racing with blood in their lungs?

Any thoughts?

In Europe, bleeders are more or less banned from breeding.  Although I'm not a "ban everything" activist, I often think we'd have better and sounder horses in the long run, if we tightened up the standards.  I once had a trainer tell me that Stakes Winner X wouldn't be worth $25k without lasix, but is that necessarily a bad outcome?

Faster, she sets a very high bar.  Do European vets and European racing adhere to these same "Dr. Sheila Lyons" standards.  Does she want us to expect and demand $10K claimers receive the same standard of veterinary care as a $350K yearling?  Makes no sense.

What the heck is she on?

Something else she says I don't buy: Euro horses are "better" than American ones. Are they ?

I don't know what the rules are over there.  But, yes, the horses are better.  Of course, that's partly because that's where most of the money goes, but they are definitely better.  (How many American Arc winners have there been?)
