86 years old, a good, long life, and he didn't run out to la-la land, either... died in his native state.

I loved the show. I met Hal Smith in California in 1967 when my family went on vacation to So Cal. Hal played Otis Campbell, the town drunk. Hal's niece, Lynn, was married to my uncle Ken. They all lived in L.A. in the Brentwood area.
Hal lost his Andy Griffith Show job just after I met him because the show's sponsors were playing the politically correct card about the portrayal of public drunkenness on the show. I don't think Hal appeared on the show after the 1967 season.
But he was always working in commercials, bit parts and he did a lot of voice work for Hanna-Barbera, Walt Disney and Warner Brothers. I know he did the voice for Goofy after the previous guy quit or died right around the time I met him.
Interesting guy. Good friends with Andy and Don Knotts. And stone cold sober in real life.
