Can anyone confirm what has happened to Eddie Razo? Hearing he was killed in a fire in his garage. Very sad.

Chris..Unfortunately, I think you are correct based on what several others have said. I had heard a few hours ago and it was confirmed including the garage fire (?) part. Other than that, I have not heard anything else but it's sad beyond words.

My deepest sympathy go out to Doreen and Nicholas. Your husband and father was one of my favorites. Eddie was a class act! Perhaps Jerry has someone to pal around with now. RIP

I always liked him. He always seemed nice and gave me a pair of his goggles during a muddy day on the old dirt track at AP. I feel old know seeing as getting jockey goggles is a crazy event there on the weekends now.

Here's a quote from an article off the front page.

"Long Grove Fire Protection District officials declined to comment on the fire and referred all questions to the Lake County sheriff’s department."

Was some sort of illegal activity going on like methamphetamine manufacturing?  This is one of the good guys yet this article makes him look bad.

How does the actual article (as opposed to your spin on it) make him look bad? The Sherriff's Office and the the state Fire Marshal are in charge of the investigation, not the Long Grove fire folks. So they refer questions to the people doing the investigation.

In my opinion, referring questions to the police gives off a tone of criminal activity.  As opposed to saying questions will be directed to the fire investigations unit.

I got the impression from one of the other stories that the Lake County Sherriff's office IS the fire investigations unit as far as Long Grove goes.

Long Grove is a very small suburb and is covered by a couple of "Fire Protection Districts"; while the folks that make up the fire protection units are deadly serious about their duties, the fact is that the districts are staffed mostly by volunteers.

I don't claim to know the exact mix of professionals and volunteers in Long Grove, their total staffing levels nor their level of investigative expertise, but kicking an investigation of something outside the range of an ordinary fire to the next higher level of gummint (Lake County, in his case) has got to be pretty standard. Tiny 'burbs can barely afford a Fire Chief, let alone costly, highly trained arson / explosion / hazmat experts.

There was an explosion, the cause of which is unknown. The authorities, being the authorities, are charged with figuring out what happened. There's an investigation. No one investigating should be assuming anything. It's not about making anyone looks good or bad, but about piecing together facts.

Eddie had the best smile of a jockey. Always positive wheather he was ridding for our stable or another stable he would always come by and wish our stable good luck. We have lost a really good man. Thanks for the memories Eddie!
