I was reading up on the Group Bet that will be offered in NJ (http://www.thebigm.com/RACINGNEWSDETAIL.ASP?NEWSID=5351), and it gave me a kind of crazy idea...

You could use the same concept on exactas and trifectas, essentially "creating" quinellas and "trios" (the "quinella" version of a trifecta) BUT, keeping the wagers in the same pools.  This way, you offer new exotic bet types new patrons, without cannbalizing the current pools!

Here's the idea:
If you bet a $2 "Quinella" the money would be allocated into the perfecta pool using dutching principles as follows:

(you bet a 1-2 "Quinella")

Say the 1-2 exacta is paying $41.00, and the 2-1 exacta is paying $82.00.  The computer automatically bets $1.33 on the 1-2 for you, and 67 cents on the 2-1.  No matter what combination comes in, your "quinella" return is $27.20.

You could do the exact same concept with the Trifecta.

This creates totally new wagers and builds/doesn't hurt the current pools in place.  A good idea?

Best,
EW

Isn't there some kind of pick 6 or something starting there where you pick your 6 races out of the whole card, there's one other new bet that I can't remember.  Does anyone know?

It's the choose six, and it's currently in play at Delaware Park.  NJ will also be rolling this bet out in 2006.  I'm not completely up on it (since I don't pay ANY attention to Del), but it's a novel concept, but one that will most likely not succeed in the end.  It's impossible to peg value/bet responsibly to begin with -- without letting people rebuy.

IMO, this bet will only work in a small market, because it's too easy to hit with a good sized ticket.  Interesting idea, but not something I see as successful.  I could be proved incorrect, however!

you can re buy into the choose six as long as there are at least 6 races left on the card
