Taser Gun was the only horse I've ever seen clear from the 8 at Maywood BEFORE the turn...MULTIPLE times.

RTP,

While not a class horse, maybe you remember a claimer the Leonards had named Blackbar's Tara?
For it's class the horse had great gate speed.
Especially at Maywood.
Unfortunately, the horse also died on the track at Maywood from what I remember?

To be completely factual, the USTA did a research project on who was the fastest horse out of the starting gate, I think around 1988, maybe 89.  I know it was in a Hoof Beats publication and it was stated then after all of the research was completed, my Canadian friend, Doug McIntosh's horse, Wilco's Data was the fastest, at that time.  I know there was mention of RTP's horse, Keystone Accent and also horses like Kentucky, Albatross, Nansemond, Smog and others.

Keep in mind that the research project was done probably only up through the 80's so I’m sure there is probably faster gate horses since that time.  I know from my experiences at the track that Childewood Hanover was pretty quick out of the gate.  Two horses that come to mind as quick gate horses during my time were Rusty Rail and Fiddler's Green A...or anything that James H. Walker or Robert Decker drove! LOL.

Best Regards,
Joseph M. Dakuras

Blackbar's Tara got hung past the quarter at Maywood and keeled over dead on the second turn. 1978
A few months earlier had wired the field at AP from the 9-hole in a mile race (starting IN the turn).  1977

locally in ohio/mich 2 of the fastest gate movers were just good old ordinary horses...at raceway very few could shoot down the hill faster than john konesky  III's GRAIN DEALER .. and in michigan, a great speedball out of the gate was dave cowells...J J'S CASINO.. who would literally slide the bike across the track back in the day when he would go firing out from the outside posts..

There was a trotter by the name of Mac Burgie(I think) that would always gun to the lead and falter late.  He was a cheaper claimer and would take a 7-8 length lead in the early going and die on the way home.

This reminds me of Henry Lauxmont.  Anybody remember him?  He raced very simliar...would get waaaay out there (sometimes 10-15 lengths) and just try to hold on.

Best,

the master of the half mile track...henry lauxmont and one of the mccarty boys in his sulky used to tear up the first half to three quarters mile at the downs of northville then get quite limber... and pray that the line would soon be near...
