What can we do with a lazy well bred 4 yr old racing gelding --has tons of potential just plain lazy

IMHO Lazy in it's self is not all that bad. Certainly better then the opposite.
Some of the best horses I have ever had were some of the laziest.
Just watch some of the horses walking around at The Meadowlands just before they turn to go to the starting gate. Many of them seem to be saying with their body language "Ah gee shucks can't I just relax for a bit more"? And then they turn and pace in 1:50 .
But first I think you need to explain what you are calling lazy.
I am guessing that what you are calling lazy to a fault is not what I (or many horsemen) would call lazy to a fault.
