In the spirit of Easter, and with spring here, how about we do something positive
with all this handicapping knowledge we have out here? Maybe something different from the usual name calling, bickering, and negative atmosphere that's been going on lately?

I say we do a Kentucky Derby day contest, with a small entry fee ($10 or $25) that the winner can donate to his or her favorite charity. Or we can designate one, such as the pemanently disabled jockeys fund, juvenile diabetes, or to the fund of the girl that was recently killed at Balmoral. Maybe $2 win and place on the entire card? This gives us 2 weeks to get everything together. Does anybody have the time, patience, and organizational skills to handle the mutual tabulating and/or money collecting? I'm in for whatever the consensus decides. Maybe the moderator can lead the troops?

If we find a way to go the charity route, I'm in.

Think this is a great idea, DonP!

Paypal makes it pretty easy to collect funds, as long as the cash is going to a reputable person. Moderator?

I like the idea that winner gets to donate the winnings to charity of their choice.

I'm in.

I am in, if it's for Haylee.  I recommend giving the money to Janine.  It's easy enough to find her at the track each weekend.

Keep coming up with ideas folks.  I nominate Brian for running the contest, because he's got more experience with that than I do.

If we do this, my mom (who doesn't post here) said she'd be interested in contributing/playing. If we go ahead, I'll post her picks here for her in advance.

I'll participate, but it is someone else's turn to run a contest.

Janine emailed me and asked if I would run it if we're going to deal with collecting cash for a charity, etc, and I'd be more than happy to put together a spreadsheet and run the contest, collect the cash, and work with the winner to get the money sent to the charity of their choice if that's the route we go.

I'll be working from Arlington Opening Weekend, or can deal in Paypal for those who can't make it out, or we can find other arrangements if that's how we proceed.

Brian, you da man, so go ahead and make the calls:

* $10 or $25 (I don't care. It's for charity. Tough economy, might get more players for $10.)

* Where do we send the money? Paypal is fine, so is anything else.

Great idea Don. I urge people to consider either the Disabled Jockey's Fund, or RICF, or both.

Let's do this, BTW'ers. Great concept, charities are starving for contributions in this economy...and IMO if you can afford to bet the Derby, you can squeeze out a sawbuck for those that are less fortunate than you.

I'd say let's go ahead for a $10 minimum contribution to the contest if everyone agreed to that (it's really up to those who want to participate), but since it's for charity, equal contributions don't matter like they would if we were all playing for a pot that went to the winner, so anyone can feel free to toss in $20 if they want to.

I'll be working at Arlington both Opening Day and Derby Day if anyone wants to swap cash that way, or I'm on paypal at brianwspencer at hotmail.com. If anyone is going to send cash that way, send me a PM here in advance so I know who it's coming from to keep track of who's in for this. We've still got a week to make it happen, but I also think this is a great idea.

Brian

I will stop by one day at AP and give you my share.   Things have been hectic for me of late (several personal issues) so I may or may not have time to make picks on Saturday but I am in for the sake of charity.

I'm assuming we're still "on" for this thing, right?

Brian I think I just sent you dough on Paypal.

I just assumed it was not on for lack of interest, but I did get the email Terry.

Really not sure, as only about five or so people expressed interest. Will figure out with you Terry, and just send it back or something, as nobody has sent me anything else and nobody dropped anything off at AP today.

I haven't made full card picks, figuring we weren't doing this.

If all else fails, just give the money to the ITHA for one of their backside charities. I don't hardly need $20 back.

At least if I'm the only one playing, it should be easy to win and declare myself a renowned forum contest winner.  thumbs up
