SUNDAY’S FLORIDA DERBY TO BE SHOWN LIVE ON NTRA.COM
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s (NTRA) Web site, NTRA.com
, will offer free, live video streaming this Sunday of the Grade I, $1 million Florida Derby from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla. The Florida Derby Webcast is the first in the 2011 NTRA Live! series of Webcasts.
Sunday’s Webcast, to be hosted by Randy Moss, is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. (ET), with post time for the Florida Derby slated for 5:42 p.m. (ET). The race also will be televised live on HRTV. Moss will also review what he feels were some of the key Derby preps run earlier this year.
In addition to live streaming of featured races, NTRA Live! features interviews with handicappers and on-track analysts, interactive chats with viewers, pre-and post-race analysis, free Equibase past performance data, handicapping selections; a one-click link to wagering opportunities, and other original and unique programming components. The Executive Producer of NTRA Live! is Tim Turrell, who has produced numerous telecasts on horse racing and other sports for ESPN, The Golf Channel and others. Access to the Webcast is free.
The Florida Derby is a major stepping stone to the Triple Crown. In 2008, Big Brown used a powerful Florida Derby win as a springboard to victory in the Kentucky Derby. Barbaro did likewise in 2006. Last year, Ice Box parlayed a Florida Derby win into a strong second-place finish in the “Run for the Roses.” This year’s event will feature a competitive field of eight led by Fountain of Youth winner Soldat, Holy Bull victor Dialed In, Gotham winner Stay Thirsty, undefeated Hutcheson hero Flashpoint and last year’s Remsen winner, To Honor and Serve.
The Florida Derby takes on added significance this year due to the existence of the new Preakness 5.5. bonus program. Dialed In and Soldat are each eligible for the Preakness 5.5 bonus by virtue of their wins in the Holy Bull Stakes and Fountain of Youth Stakes, respectively. Should either horse win the Florida Derby and go on to capture the May 21 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, that horse will earn a $5.5 million bonus for his connections ($5 million to the owner and $500,000 to the trainer).
Following Sunday’s Webcast, NTRA Live! will continue on April 9 with a Webcast of the Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial from Aqueduct and on April 16 with the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes from Keeneland. NTRA Live! will also present a special Webcast (date TBA) offering a comprehensive preview of the 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
