I've no idea whom the author (C. H. M.) is.
From Dec 13, 1922 Horse Review.

AT THE DOOR OF THE AUTO SHOP
In the door of the auto shop
   The village 'smith now stands;
A teardrop glistens in his eye
   As he slowly folds his hands.

He's dreaming of the happy past,
   Of days long since gone by
When horses thronged the thoroughfares,
   Standard breeding was the cry.

He's dreaming of the roadsters
   That all have passed away;
He wonders if folks have the fun
   They had in that good old day?

He gazes on the autos
   As they rush past with a roar,
And wonders if their drivers
    Could have driven in days of yore,

When it took a man of sinew
   A toppy team to drive
As they swept along the same old lane,
   Where motor cars now thrive.

He wonders if they get the thrill,
   That feeling rare and fine,
His old mare Nancy used to send
   To him along the line?

He sighs again and wonders
   As his head wags to and froŚ
Does the auto give the pleasure
   That the horse did long ago?

I have searched for this answer, but can't come up with anything. Sad
(But I like it regardless.)

Pat,
       In the old periodicals and especially in the Horse Review, many of the items were submitted by locals and correspondence.
 It could have been written and submitted by most anybody. It would be nice if we had an author to attribute the item to, however the thing I've learned to accept in my archival travels is that all questions will not get answered.

 All magazines have files and files of very brief items that are marked "to be used in emergency as a space filler".
 When I'm going through a periodicals and through the process of archival, I'll lump these "filler" items into one file, which I name "Tidbits".
 Creating a full file for such brief items (many are only one or two lines) items would make organization of files a nightmare, not to mention increasing tremendously the overall quantity of files in my archives.

Well, in spite of "credit not being given where credit is due", they are good reading. Thanks.
