Two excerpts from July 1963 Hoof Beats and Larry Evan's, Fair Affairs:

We're impressed annually with the Massac County Fair flyer printed at Metropolis, Ill. This eight‑page, eight‑column information publication covers all offerings at "The biggest little county fair in Illinois" running from July 1‑6 with harness racing a four‑program attraction. The trotters and pacers go into action on the night of July 3 with afternoon and night sessions on July 4 and night racing on July 5. Metropolis is part of the flourishing Egyptian Colt Stakes circuit which was to open at Paducah, Ky. on June 26. A loss to Fair racing in this area was the recent death of 87‑year‑old August Wessel who passed away in Evansville. Mr. Wessel was an active driver until two years ago. . . .

. . . That matinee card at the state fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill., on May 19 still has horsemen buzzing. More than 4,500 fans turned out and the fair's general manager, Franklin Rust, plans more of the same next spring. Jake Bunn, who has considerable high priced talent in the barn of Edgar and Jack Leonard, got a chance to prove his own ability and steered Luck Hanover to victory. Another owner, Rhina Warren, was second with Scot Pride while 19‑year‑old Donnie Hayes was third with Rhodes Conklin. Pros Bill Rouse, John Cisna and Jack Leonard had to settle for a rear view as the owners showed the way. . . . Springfield observers tell Herman Graham his stable should be named for the television show "My Three Sons" with Herman, Jr., Tommy and Jerry sharing and doing very well in the driving department. . . .
