Two-year-old PASS finals at Chester; Hervé wins opener

The 2010 stakes season at Harrah's Chester came to its conclusion on Sunday (September 5) afternoon, with four $200,000 Pennsylvania Sire Stakes finals highlighting the Labor Day Eve card.

Beatgoeson Hanover ($3.00) turned in a track record 1:56.1 effort in the $200,000 final for two-year-old trotting fillies, holding clear of the pocket-sitting Celebrity Katie by 1-3/4 lengths in rein to Hall-of-Fame driver Ron Pierce.  Nifty Norman trains the daughter of Andover Hall for Australian owner Neven Botica.

Cold Mist ($9.40) gave Brett Miller a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes championship in a thrilling stretch drive, as the top five two-year-old pacing fillies were covered by a mere half-length in their $200,000 final.  The Steve Elliott-owned and trained daughter of McArdle enjoyed a pocket trip behind runner-up In Deep Thought, just up a nose from the inside as Hasty Pulse, Hi Maintenancechic and Foxy Lady all closed in through the last 150 yards.  Kenneth Klein and the Old Block Stables share ownership of Cold Mist with Elliott.

Not Nice ($11.60) was best of the two-year-old trotting colts, saving ground for much of the race before being locked in at the pylons on the far turn.  As the first-over Mythical Hall faded, Yannick Gingras moved the Glidemaster colt three-wide, responding at will in the last sixteenth of a mile, drawing away for a 2-1/2 length win in 1:56.3. Jimmy Takter trains Not Nice for Christina Takter, Falkbolagen Ab, the Order By Stable, and Daniel Plouffe.

Winkin Atcha ($3.20) rounded out the winners of the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes finals, repelling a challenge from Something for Doc before sprinting away to a 4-1/4 length victory over Mr Carmine Fra and Mystic Desire, taking a 1:51.4 clocking under Brian Sears in the pacing colts division.  Trainer George Teague co-owns the Dragon Again colt with Theodore Gewertz, Gustis Teague, and the Paisano Stable.

Hervé Filion Day a rousing success

Fans came out to Harrah's Chester in droves on Sunday for the chance to meet Hervé Filion, the winningest driver in North American harness racing and a mainstay on the old Brandywine-Liberty Bell circuit--and they were certainly in for a treat.

Filion drove in the first race on Sunday's thirteen-race card, aboard the Lou Peña-trained Lightning Elvis ($3.80).  After floating into the first turn and working his way to the front, there was no looking back, stealing a :57.2 first half before a powerful :26.4 third quarter in which Lightning Elvis turned away the first over Native Art.  Through the far turn, Lightning Elvis started to pull clear, eventually winning by 3-1/4 lengths in 1:52.1 under mild urging.
