Send some this way. It's been high-50's / low-60's for the better part of a week, and won't quit raining.

Rats.  Hollywood canceled Thursday for what reason, I don't know.  Not enough horses maybe.

Hollywood cancelled for lack of entries.

Philly cancelled due to high heat today.

Let's not have any whining about cancellations due to extreme heat, please, lest we all look like a bunch of ignorant jackasses. Between the damn diuretics and all the dicking around with the poor animal's TCO2 levels, it's amazing that more horses don't drop dead out there when it's hot.

Find something else to do besides betting on horses. YOU CAN DO IT, I have faith in you!  Wink

Get some Louisiana Downs horses up there. You never felt such miserable heat and humidity, but they keep right on running.

I can't even imagine them having to run in over 100 degree weather!  And those poor jocks.  The way people are talking about how hot the fake track gets, it must be brutal on the horses feet.  No?  Or hooves.   Sheesh.

pammy, have you ever seen a blacksmith heat shoe red hot then while the shoe is hot put it on the sole of the foot for a few seconds.  the smell is unforgettable. smoke everywhere, the horse wont even flinch. i doubt the synthetics get that hot.

I forgot that!   I did see that with my horses but could not watch, so I guess I didn't see it put on.  I turned my head.   And from then on, I had my husband to the watching when that was going to happen.  Good point, and thank you.  Makes me feel better about the horses on those fake tracks.

We all know those flyweights on the East coast can't stand a little hot weather.
I can't imagine any track in the midwest canceling due to a 100 degree day. We'd be out there at FP gunning for those $4400 purses.
Don't recall ever seeing a day where heat made any horses drop dead. They are desert animals, and can even take the humidity.

They don't run fast enough at FP to work up a sweat, let alone induce major organ failure.  nyah

They are desert animals, and can even take the humidity.

Seriously?

They WERE desert animals, at one time.

They were more stout, had more stamina. God knows how bad man has screwed up the breed with intentional inbreeding for speed and continual chemical enhancement.

Humidity? We're lucky if today's fragile-as-stained-glass thoroughbreds can withstand a stiff breeze without collapsing.

                                                          horse
The hottest place on the planet in the summer is at Ellis Park. You can take a towel and sop up the air there its so humid.
Keeping the horses hydrated is the biggest challenge in those conditions. You also have to add salt to your ice water to cool your horse down sufficiently.

Ellis is hot, but I still vote for Louisiana Downs.

The GF and I used to drive over there from Dallas for the races, and if it was 103 and muggy in Dallas you could count on 105 and extra 30% humidity in Shreveport.
