I'm worried about leaving Hawthorne after the races on Fridays. There's not enough lighting in the parking lot for me.

You may want to contact Hawthorne about that or employ the services of John Frank,
either way you`re barking up the wrong tree.

I agree with both of your remarks. The parking lot is to dark. If you tell management - they probably won't do anything about it(they have no money to spend) nor does the guy in charge of maintenance have any clue on how to make it right. John Frank is a Trackside Arlington guy.

What is humerous to me about the 3pm time is this: Does Hawthorne think they are like Arlington?
At Arlington the 3pm Friday's work because of all the yuppie (25 to 50 age) crowd that shows up after work to start the weekend out with some brews and bets. The problem with this at Hawthorne is that hardly NO ONE that goes to Hawthorne works anyway. Do they really think that they will attract younger professionals with a 3pm post time??
What they need to do is bite the bullet, and go back to FAN FRIENDLY FRIDAY'S with the $1.00 programs, $1.00 admission, $1.00 jumbo Vienna hotdogs,$1.00 popcorn, $1.00 20ounce beers..THAT attracted at least 300 to 400 more patrons every Friday then before they had started doing that program.
It was mostly younger guys and gals that liked the cheap prices for the draft beer, and it worked in a big way. Of course the older regulars liked it too. They still made a profit also. I used to do the cost analysis for everything they sold - so if someone says they didn't make money-they are lying through their teeth, or someone is relaying something someone else said that's not correct.

Horsepoor:

Don't worry, I've heard Hawthorne is planning to hire Gino Oliver to patrol
the parking lot on Fridays with a pair of holstered pistols ready to strike against
ANY potential scofflaws.

The press release seems to indicate it is an effort to draw more crowds, but I wonder if they think they will play into the national simulcasting menu a little better with the late start and that might be the reason behind it, like it or not - that is the reason behind most starting time and even stakes days nowadays as the vast majority of revenue comes from simo's.

John Frank will be going to Hawthorne on Fridays from now on! Why would it matter for John Frank, he dresses like a slob. John Frank wouldn't get mugged anyways.

Ah, Hawthorne Voice, good to see you in your midseason form, but, sissypants? That sounds like a term somebody would use in grade school. I buy the posttime change as a simulcasting move that ducks the competition from the East Coast tracks.  This sure is no "Party in the Park" situation.

Re: "sissypants", I claim creative writing, response-in-kind...that sort of thing. And when one is afraid of things one ought not be afraid of (i.e., the dark, Hawthorne's parking lot, and one's own shadow), well, "sissy" does come to mind.

You (and others) are right: this move to a later start on Friday is all about simulcasting dollars, nothing else. Roughly 90% of Hawthorne's daily handle comes from off-track sources, so if they lose an on-track player who soils himself when he's in a blue-collar neighborhood after dark, who cares? Hawthorne isn't for little boys in short pants, anyway.

If horsepoor is worried about racing after dark, he just needs to wait until April 7, the second Friday for the new starting time.  Sunset then will be 7:23 pm, well after the last race.

Plus the track lights will be on for a while after the last race, which should brighten up the parking lot.

There is also a free shuttle bus that traverses the parking lot, so you can wait at the entrances to be picked up and dropped off at/near your vehicle.

Personally, I think it's a good move - they can draw in the California simulcast dollars hopefully.  The TVG deal will also help with more people off work later and the races being on.

If you're scared of the parking lot, pay the extra couple bucks and park on Laramie side. Very close to the clubhouse doors, better lit, and closer to the building.

I can see this 3:00 pm thing being decent. I don't usually like going to Hawthorne on week days because the drive home in rush hour traffic stinks. I either leave at 3:30 or don't come at all. If the final race is going at 6:40 and I'm not hitting the road until 7:00, I'd be much more likely to go on Fridays. Some weekend patrons might show up as well, if it doesn't mean missing a whole afternoon of work. Probably not a ton, but some.

I walk thru the first floor grandstand from west to east and back again. Usually a few times a day when I'm there. I do this by myself. That area is alot scarier than the dark parking lot..LOL

Ladies travelling alone should get an escort to their car at *any* public venue if it's after sundown. Yes -- at AP too. Creeps are everywhere, motivated by sickness and inspired by opportunity.

Sorry for the harsh words, horsepoor.

Wait for Arlington, Horsepoor.  Unless you are attending some kind of exhibition or show, you will be walking back to your car in the beautiful sunshine and fresh air of Arlington after a wonderful day at the races.

Hey, HV, I forget if it was you or somebody else who referred to me as a snob or maybe even a racist because I had a less than raving view of the Hawthorne scene.  Take a look at Off Stride's graphics in the post above me.  Talk about offensive!!!

I find it interesting that people are worried about getting to their car at Hawthorne because it may be dark when the races end.  Doesn't Hawthorne hold a harness meet every year where the races don't end until close to midnight.  I haven't heard of any problems with those fans getting to their cars.  Whether or not the 3 pm posts will help Hawthorne, I guess time will tell.  You cant blame them for trying something different.

yes. hawthorne does do a harness program that lasts until midnight and you dont hear the harness people complain about being scared, must be a thru-bred phobia about being out after dark, maybe all you women turn back into pumpkins after the sun goes down. .. yes, us republicans know that GOD  will guide us to our cars safely after the races .. you do sound like a bunch of whiney pencil necked geeky liberals over here on this side of the board, spending more time *** and complaining about something (like track bias lol) as opposed to doing something about your problems, harness people act... thru-bred people re-act.. the illinois bred harness horses are excelling on the nations largest stages winning countless big money races while you people sit here waiting for lightning to strike you in the ass .. if you would kindly move your winter stables from hawthorne and allow the harness people to conduct the meet it had there for many years they again would put you to shame, you took their dates, and you are suffering, you got what you wanted.. 7 horse fields , no handle, and no interest from the outside world... the typical know it all arrogance from thru-bred people is a laughable one, your ego's are bigger than your dicks and your hats are bigger than your brains

HOPE YOU FIND THIS POST OFFENSIVE... IT WAS MEANT TO BE

Sounds more like a "friend of a friend" story to me, unless you want to provide dates & times, so I can check it against the police records. Doubtful, though -- you'll come back and say "they didn't report it".

And if someone got mugged in the parking lot at Hawthorne: Big hairy effing deal. I know a guy that was mugged downtown...in broad daylight. Should we be afraid there, too? Who's the moron?

Like I said, stay in your house and shiver in total panic.

no matter whether its a he or she, security should be bulked up when the people are leaving a place...hopefully with money in pocket, there is no excuse for a gambling venue not to have extra security as the crowd files out to the parking lots, one should not have to be looking over their shoulders as they walk to their vehicles.. sorry you had this happen to you and id stay away until they fix the problem, but then again that may be a long wait

First its pretty simple to put two and two together here, Hawthorne signs a deal with TVG and then they start 3pm post times on Fridays. I would think that shows what the point is of the late post time. Second, if you are worried about the parking after dark, just valet park and don't worry about going anywhere in the dark!

As I stated earlier, all Hawthorne has to do is hire Gino Oliver to patrol the
Hawthorne parking lots. With Gino's reputation for gunning down anyone
looking suspicious, the Hawthorne lot will be one of the safest places around.
