The Crestwood OTB has been advertising (holding?) Texas Holdem poker tournaments. Seems like a good way to attract people. Anybody familiar with these tournaments? Are they drawing people? Do they also play the races?, etc.

Not sure how successful it is, but I think it is something that Hawthorne should do.  They certainly have the space for it and it might attract a younger crowd to the track.

At the very least concession sales might increase!

Texas hold-em is probably the hottest game on the globe at this time. You have a great idea Ed, now if only Joe Scurto in Marketing at Hawthorne reads this(which I've heard he does daily) and looks into the possibility. He's been hooking up alot of new horse related tourneys since he's been there..so maybe-just maybe, he might be able to swing something. Plus, I would imagine the contestants would also bet the ponies while there, and also yes-increase concessions.

i mentioned this here over a year ago and nobody seemed to warm up to the idea unfortunately, and people who work for illinois racing read this place as we know. seems illinois in general doesnt embrace poker. with all the riverboats/casinos here only the hollywood has hold em and not a big section for it. the trump in indiana i heard has a nice poker room. when i brought this up over a year ago i mentioned tampa bbay downs had a card room and we obviously know how well that track has bettered itself over the last few years. unfortunately illinois racing seems to wanna stay put in the decline its in

Still waiting to hear if anyone is familiar with the Crestwood OTB poker promotion. Seems to me that HAW could draw a crowd to the second floor grandstand with a poker tournament. Maybe money better spent on a poker tournament than the current handicapping contests?

How about the card room at Tampa Bay Downs? What kind of business do they do? Do the poker players also play the horses?

Hey Ed,
I got your message - thanks for the heads-up regarding that other poster(but I was just having some fun).

On the Poker issue-yes the poker players also will play the horses, but not all of them. However, they also attract quite a crowd of watchers that with good co-ordination from staff could possibly entice and interest them into making some bets. Once that's done a percentage will naturaly return for more. They would also sell a TON of food, refreshments and liquor.

I don't know about Tampas card room, but I know people who have been at Santa Anita's, and it's a huge huge success.

Would a card room even be legal at an Illinois track?

No Dan. The thread is regarding holding Texas Hold-em tournaments. Which would be legal.

I thought the OTB's got smacked by the IRB for running poker tourneys a year or so ago. Some sort of illegality.

BeauNarro, you sure you're not talking about the Hollywood card club? I don't remember one at Santa Anita.

Ed, the card room at Tampa is very busy, though really small. The one at Calder is bigger, but deader than a doornail. I think they decided to move all operations to Gulfstream. Closer to home, the card room at Canterbury does a lot of business, and is credited with helping the purses there a lot.

Our track owners and horsmen are holding out for the home run of slots, or free money from slots. I don't think they want to waste their time and political capital on piddly things like cards, or account wagering, or anything less than the big kahuna. Mr. D has been trying to get his fingers in the slots pie for over 10 years, why should he give up now and settle?

We had it as a news item when it happened here. Something to to with the law that says if you pay to get in a contest you have to get back as much in free junk as you put in, possibly.

Hello..
I play the Ponies now at the Palm Beach Kennal Club.
They have a huge card room...Pack's them in...a hundred or so at a time, with people waiting for a spot.
About thirty-fifty people at the simulcast..six people playing the dogs.
The people who play poker...well, they just play cards.
I have never seen one leave to play Dogs or Ponies.
