No driver, especially a 16 million in purse driver is going to grab a ticket that obviously in front of people on live tv. I am sure they are brighter than that...hopefully!  |

I don't care if they give him crack and kiddie porn. The guy can drive and it never ceases to amaze me that they will bet Pierce and Miller and the other goofs when he has the same type of horse. Race 8 is a classic example of that.

its a known fact that the lady that holds the horses iin the winners circle brings candy for all the drivers!!! she has been doing it for years, i believe there was even an article about her awhile back on the usta's site!!

I would imagine that it would be stupid by anymeans to accept something immediately after anything in sports, say that guy in football who is a showoff, catches a touchdown and then jumps into the stands and somebody shoves an envelope into his hand...Of course it will be made a spectacle of...These are not rookies we are talking about and even rookies would not fall for that one... Though the pithcher giving the ball to the firstbaseman during a meeting on the mound with a man on first is a good one!

Ray Howard, Longtime Chicago owner and good guy!!!!, Always buys the driver a $100 win and $100 place ticket and hands it over to him right in the winners circle!!!!
He's been going it for years!!!
P.S. Rays angle is that if the horse gets beat and finishes 2nd theres no trip to the winners circle to hand that place bet to the driver so Ray just cashes that ticket himself and gets his money back for the win ticket!!!

I remember when I gave Holiday a Tip in the winners circle and Buscrat and TD were standing there and said"all he did was sit behind him for 2 minutes and we rubbed him all week" "what about us?"

its nice to see sn post again, hear so much about you, both the good and the not so, but your knowledge from the inside and the past helps forum members realize what the game is all about .. i remember when a local bookmaker privately bought a horse from a terrible trainer and told the driver...jeff james.. that the horse would improve by 5 seconds in his first start for his new connxtions.. all mr james said was bet 200 on me before the windows open so he could see it on the 'tote' board and to kind of inform the 'public' what was going on.. needless to say mr lop went on to win by 15-20 lengths his first of 10 in a row... and the bookie went on to cash 30-40 grand on the race .. at least the driver deserved a ticket ot two

Owners can go broke buying tickets because horses lose more then they win. What all owners should do if they are not " cheap skates " is give the driver/trainer/groom all a tip. The tips should reflect the size of the purse that is won by the owner. For example, if the winning owner gets 7K he should tip each $300. If he gets 10 to 15K he should tip them $400 each. Above 15K $500 each. If the owner gets $1,500 or $2,000 or $3,000 racing in Chicago these days he should tip $50. That's it!

Dan,
I have seen Ray Howard give the tickets to his drivers right when he shakes their hand. There is nothing wrong with giving tips to drivers and trainers and grooms but I feel its inappropriate to give a winning ticket to them in the winners circle while thousands of people are watching across the world; its just looks fishy to the common horseplayer!!!!

A guy I work with has a horse, it won last Saturday and paid $33.00, but he wasn't even there to bet on him. What a shame.

I have seen the winning drivers get handed a envelope on occassion from both winners circle attendants at the meadowlands and freehold. Like to know whats in the envelope.  |

Absolutely right. Also, the drivers are often used as delivery men to take things back to people in the paddock, such as the paddock judge. |

Frank Carl Calebrese used to always hand the driver a "WAD" full of cash right in the winners circle then he would send Sid to the windows to cash the tickets!!!! Does he still do that in the other buisness?
