She was married to Mr. D and the matriarch of the family.  I do not know more, I was not involved in horse racing at the time that she was alive.  I have always assumed that Mr. D named this race after her as a way to honor his late wife.

He did not develop the Million, but I think he developed this companion race.  As I said, I am not real sure of these details.

The 1st running of the Beverly D was in 1987. It was only something like a $50,000 stake at that time. They jacked the purse up the following year.

A Canadian, DANCING ON A CLOUD, won the inaugural. I worked for the trainer who ran 2nd that year with a BIG SPRUCE mare named SPRUCE LUCK. She was a beautiful mare. Ran well on both surfaces, and if I'm not mistaken, turned in to a very good broodmare.

SPRUCE LUCK beat DANCING ON A CLOUD next time out in the G3 Modesty Handicap. Also in the field was AUTUMN GLITTER and LAKE CHAMPLAIN.
