No t-bred trainer in their right mind wants to get their horse out of his. These are simply very high strung athletes.
Your steroid claim is an overblown myth. And of course we all know harness trainers don't use any medications on their horses.
You only see two people handling them for big stakes races and as for the "outrider" statement, I assume you're stalking about the pony that most trainers send with the horse to warm up before a race. As much as anything else, that pony is there to help keep the horse calm. Yes, they will also help the 110 lb person, who is balanced on his toes in stirrups attached to a little piece of leather that they call a saddle, keep control of the horse.
