I read the DRF Weekender today on the train home from work and that question piqued my interest.

so of all the TB who raced on the planet earth this year. Who were the 5 best IYHO (In your humble opionion).

Mine are:

1. Sea the Stars--the top; showed versitility and class; no one got within a length of him at the finish in ANY of his races this year (so far); all G1's and high class races.

2. Rachel Alexandra--despite me not thinking that she's all that; I think she a really good horse.

3. Goldikova--Great turn of foot is her seperator-she has a devestaving kick

4. Stacelita--undefeated but beaten by Dar ra mi in her last start. still showed me enough in her earlier races to rank this high

5. Summer Bird--won the Belmont and the Travers; normally would be the best in the USA with those two under his belt but took an ass kicking at Monmouth at the hands of RA.

If Gio Ponti wins in the Hirsch at Belmont, would you reconsider and let him in???

1) RACHEL ALEXANDRA- one of the most ambitious and impressive campaigns I have seen in a while

2) SEA THE STARS- also a very impressive campaign

3) DAR RE MI- was robbed last out in France, should have 3 straight group 1 wins

4) ZENYATTA- would have liked to have seen a more from her

5) GIO PONTI- 4 straight grade 1's under a nice variety of conditions and distances

some of the top 5 run on 10-3 at belmont..

in the 12f turf the hirsch classic saturday
gio ponti ?

rachel alexandra

fabulous trike , who runs saturday at belmont might be the fastest sprinter.

sea the stars

mastercraftsman was very impressive in his QE2 loss to STS..

perhaps ..summer bird if, he can win on saturday..if not, macho again deserves consideration, as that grade 1 , would be the highlight on an off radar career, if he could step up to a new figure high this year winning 10-3, he is deserving of some accolades in terms of career achievments.

Put Gio Ponti in for Summer Bird and I agree with you.

On second thought I'd remove #3, 4 or 5 on my list and add GOLDIKOVA.

I consider the Euros to be VASTLY superior to Americans in turfing. The ONLY way for Gio Ponti to make my 5 would be to win both the Hirsch and then win the BC Turf.
I just don't see that happening.

Gio Ponti.

Ed,
Do you think Gio Ponti is as good as English Channel (the last US bred horse to win the Turf) going a mile and a half.

After I read a little deeper into his accomplishments, yes.

Gio Ponti has never won (or even tried) 12F races. English Channel is a multiple G1 winner at 12F.

Gio Ponti has a lot to prove to me. Maybe he could pull off the Turf Classic-BC turf Double. maybe he can't. I know one thing they are bringing horses better than Muskitier to the BC turf. (namely last years champ conduit). He beats the champ and the rest of the horses and I'll put him in the top 5. Until then he's just another good horse this year.

I don't think he's going to like 12 furlongs being by Tale of the Cat, but he's already won at 11 so who knows.  I think he's the best male horse in America by far having won 4 straight Grade 1s from 1 mile to 1 3/8.  I would be running him in the Classic at 1 1/4 miles on synthetic.  He only managed 5th in the Strub but did win the Sir Beaufort on the Pro Ride.  We'll find out more today, but if he doesn't stay at Belmont, which is my guess, hopefully he joins the fray in the big one at Santa Anita.
