Have you noticed that in recent times, everything is a major crisis?
Swine flu,
Financial Crisis,
Banking Crisis,
Healthcare Crisis,
Energy Crisis,
Pirates raiding on the high seas crisis,
Airport security Crisis,
Global Warming Crisis,
Housing Crisis,

Hitler manufactured Crisis as did Castro and every other  dictator.

How many Crisis can you add to the above?

The only way you can make Americans listen is to declare something a crisis or wage war on it. Soon there will be a "war on swine flu"!

I'm not trying to underestimate the new flu. I was only making a joke in agreement with Samstar.

Right now I'm in an urgent care clinic and I actually worry about what to do when the flu reaches my area. My wife is once again pregnant, so I am not certain a student rotation is worth the risk. I only have a few days to decide, as it's in my state already. The thing is she teaches, so she'll be exposed whether I bring it home or a kid walks into her class. I'll sleep better at night if she is exposed by someone other than me...

The trick seems to be recognizing the symptoms quickly and getting a prescription for tamiflu or relenza to help your body fight the virus. Hopefully it will fizzle out like other scares in recent history.

The Swine Flu may have just hit home.  My 24 year old niece is an unconfirmed case.  Fortunately, nobody in my household has had contact with her since April 8.  I'll keep you posted.  We have Tamiflu just in case.

Unfortunately, too many parents routinely send their kids to school sick.  It's usually the younger ones because they can't be left alone, which compounds the problem because they haven't learned proper hygiene.  I taught at a K-8 school in an urban setting and, when a virus would spread through the school, it almost always began in the early grades.

New York Times reports first US fatality dies from swine flu.

On the other hand, the Houston Chronicle reports the child died from pneumonia.

The WorldHealthOrg says it will no longer disseminate the words "swine flu" to the media since people confuse the words "swine flu"  with pork chops, rib tips, chitterlings, bacon and eggs, spam, hocks, pigtails, snouts, hot dogs, tenderloins, pork roast, bratwurst, pork loaf, etc.

Odds are very good she'll be fine. The vast majority will fight it off like any other viral infection.

Good luck to your niece.

And playing the odds seems to be correct on this.  Apparent tonsillitis but they're sending some blood sample to CDC anyway.  Thanks for the kind words.

They clarified his statement right after. He meant if YOU are sick you shouldn't get on a plane.

You can stop with your partisan political attacks now. Sheesh. If you whined every time Bush said something stupid, you would have been whining continuously for the past eight years.

And that's all that's left of the Republican Party is you ultra right wingers, who have nothing better than to scream "Socialist" "MUSLIMS" "Terrorist", etc, etc.

Re: the airplane thing?? I'd say the same thing I said about it NOW: who's the stupid f*ck who approved that?

Just wanted to let all of you know that my niece does have tonsillitis & is expected to be fine within a day or 2.  Thank you all for your kind wishes & thoughts.

Broward County has closed at least one high school (Hallandale High, where Gulfstream is located) for at least 7 days.  Word is that they are cancelling the SAT's.  So far my daughter's high school, along with the others remain open.  Forecasters expect Florida, California & Texas to have the highest number of infected people.
