George Dennis is a second generation horseman. His dad, Jim Dennis, Sr., is well remembered in the Delaware Valley for the top invitational pacer Beau Butler and top mare pacers Duchess Stratton and Elise Butler of the 1980s era. George’s brother, Eddie Dennis, is also one of the top young talents racing in Delaware. George came into his own in the early 1990s when he became one of the leading drivers at Rosecroft Raceway, while at the same time, brother Eddie, was one of the top drivers at Harrington. The Delaware renaissance has reestablished George as a top horseman at Dover Downs and Harrington. He trains and drives his own stable of horses, while at the same time has built up a strong corps of trainers for whom he gets the first call. During the 2005 season, Dennis broke the 100-win barrier for the 14th straight season and the $1 million earnings plateau for the ninth consecutive campaign. Ranking among the driving leaders in the state of Delaware once again, George finished fourth in wins (47) and fifth in earnings ($449,048) at the spring meeting at Harrington Raceway last year. At Harrington’s fall session in 2005, he was sixth in both victories (40) and purses ($398,082). At the winter meeting at Dover Downs last year, George finished seventh in both earnings ($731,388) and wins (65). At Dover’s fall session, he finished in a seventh place tie for victories with 23 and was tenth in purses ($290,946). Last year saw George train and drive the three-year-old trotting filly Go Sassy Go. She was a winner in eight of her 15 appearances, with earnings of $114,575. George steered the CR Commando lass to a personal best 1:58.2 score in the $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund Final at Dover. The eight-year-old pacing gelding Bramalea Road was another solid Dennis pupil in 2005. He posted seven firsts, six seconds and seven thirds in 38 trips behind the gate, while adding $113,707 to his career winnings. Bramalea Road was frequently found in Dover and Harrington’s Delaware Special events. Dennis was also the regular reinsman behind the seven-year-old trotting gelding Rattlesnake Jake in ’05. He hit the board in 12 of his 29 starts and cashed $112,450 in checks. The son of Schimitar was a regular in the top class trotting events at both Dover and Harrington. Among the other top horses Dennis has driven in recent years include Always A Fool (a multiple winner in the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Stakes in 1997); This Ain’t Dover (who he drove to a track record clocking of 1:53.3 at Harrington in 1997); Ain’t Nobodys Fool (a multiple winner in the Delaware Standardbred Owners Association Stake in 1999); Modern Life (who banked $208,939 in 2002 and won a pair of Delaware Standardbred Owners Association Finals); Shark Sation (who had back-to-back $100,000-plus campaigns in 2002 and 2003); Kissed By A Fool (who was a multiple victor in Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund finals in 2003); and Jus’ Chilln Out (a winner of a pair of Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund Finals as both a two-year-old in 2003 and a three-year-old in 2004).
