September 28, 2009

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama will travel to Denmark to support Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, projecting the highest-ever White House profile in lobbying for the international event.

Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president, told The Associated Press on Monday morning that Obama will leave Thursday and join his wife, Michelle, in Copenhagen, where they'll make the pitch to the International Olympic Committee. Obama would be the first U.S. president to actually appeal in person to the International Olympic Committee for an Olympic event.

The International Olympic Committee is meeting in Copenhagen to select a host city for the 2016 Summer Games. Chicago faces tough competition from Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo.

The White House later formally announced the trip, saying that Obama and his wife "will both make presentations to the IOC during Friday' session. They will discuss why Chicago is best to host the 2016 Summer Games, and how the United States is eager to bring the world together to celebrate the ideals of the Olympic movement.''

While in Denmark, the statement said, Obama and his wife also will meet with the Queen and the president will meet with Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen of Denmark.

Obama, who represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate after serving in the Illinois Legislature, is a longtime supporter of Chicago's bid. He and Michelle consider it their adopted home town, and he recently sent letters to selected IOC members, promising a "spectacular Olympic experience for one and all.''

"President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama symbolize the hope, opportunity and inspiration that makes Chicago great, and we are honoured to have two of our city's most accomplished residents leading our delegation in Copenhagen,'' Mayor Richard M. Daley said in a statement. "Who better to share with members of the International Olympic Committee the commitment and enthusiasm Chicago has for the Olympic and Paralympic Movement than the President and First Lady.''

The president had held off on announcing a trip to Copenhagen, saying his first priority was the ongoing debate in Washington over health care reform. The legislation is a signature piece of his domestic policy agenda and negotiations on Capitol Hill have been contentious.

But with heads of state representing Rio and Madrid already scheduled to attend the IOC meeting Friday, Chicago's bid organizers had hoped Obama would make an in-person appeal.

"I don't think there's an IOC member on the planet that wouldn't love to meet your president. He's a transformational figure in the world today,'' Canadian Dick Pound, a longtime IOC member Dick Pound, said recently.

Obama is also mobilizing his administration on behalf of Chicago's bid. Senior adviser Jarrett, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, will also be joining the Obamas in Copenhagen. All are from Illinois.

They join a Chicago contingent already packed with more star power than a Hollywood red carpet. The first lady is one of the few people who rivals her husband in visibility, and she'll be joined by talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who trails only Angelina Jolie on Forbes' annual Celebrity 100 list, a ranking of the rich and famous' most powerful.

Chicago is also bringing 14 Olympic and two Paralympic gold medallists, including Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Nadia Comaneci and Nastia Liukin.

He has spoken to the General in charge in Afghanisrtan once in 70-days yet he finds the time to just up and fly to Denmark for an Olympics speech.

The Windy City Olympic Shakedown

New York Post - September 30, 2009

WHEN government of ficials play the Olympic lottery, tax payers lose. That has been the disastrous experience of host cities around the world. So, why are President Obama and his White House entourage headed to Copenhagen, Denmark, this week to push a fiscally doomed Chicago 2016 bid? Political payback.

Bringing the games to the Windy City is Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley's "vision." The entrenched Democratic powerbroker -- in office since 1989 -- would like to cap off his tenure with a glorious $4 billion bread-and-circuses production. The influential Daley machine backed Barack Obama in the presidential primaries. Obama lavished praise on Daley's stewardship of the city. Longtime Daley cronies helped pave Obama's path to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Now, they're returning the favor for their hometown boss.

Daley: Being repaid for backing O.

Senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, a Daley loyalist, served as vice chair of Chicago's 2016 Summer Olympics bid committee before moving to the White House, where she has helmed a new "White House Office on Olympic, Paralympic and Youth Sport" with an undisclosed budget and staff.

It's not just Chicago taxpayers who should be worried about this field of schemes. Crain's Chicago Business reports that Jarrett and Chicago 2016 committee member Lori Healey met this month with federal officials at the Department of Housing and Urban Development "to discuss financing options" for the estimated $1 billion Olympic Village.

The door is open, and the administration is "willing to meet and listen" to any federal subsidy proposals, Jarrett said. Hey, what happened to Obama's tough rules on interest-conflicted lobbying by his administration officials?

A majority of Chicagoans who live in pay-for-play-plagued Cook County oppose public funding for the Olympics. The city has more than a half-billion-dollar deficit -- and just received word that its Olympic insurance policy will cover only about $1.1 billion of the $3.8 billion operating budget drawn up by Daley. Cost overruns, fraud and union-inflated contracts are inevitable.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs defended Obama's all-out campaign for Chicago's 2016 Olympics bid by claiming America will see a "tangible economic benefit." But, as is always the case with corporate welfare disguised as "economic development," an elite few will benefit far more than others.

Senior White House adviser David Axelrod has been a Daley loyalist since 1989, when he signed up as a political consultant for the mayor's first run. Axelrod's public relations firm, Chicago-based AKPD Message and Media, has pitched in work for the Chicago 2016 committee. It is unknown how much AKPD has received for its services -- or how much it will make in future income if the bid is successful.

The head of the Chicago 2016 bid committee is Patrick Ryan, chairman of the Aon Corp. and a co-chair of Obama's presidential inaugural committee. Also on both of those committees: Obama confidante Penny Pritzker, who, in addition, chairs the Olympic Village subcommittee and is president of Pritzker Realty Group -- a mega-developer in Illinois that could reap untold millions in project work if the Daley machine/White House campaign succeeds. Former Pritzker executive and Obama campaign treasurer Martin Nesbitt is also on the bid committee -- and serves as Daley's chairman of the Chicago Housing Authority.

Another bid committee member, Michael Scott Jr., is "trying to develop a for-profit real-estate project that would sit within feet of the cycling venue if Chicago wins the 2016 Summer Games," according to the Chicago Tribune.

It takes a crony-filled White House to raise a Chicago Olympic village. Daley and Obama will get the glory. America will get stuck with the bill.

It is a conflict of interest. Members of the current Obama Administration were on that Chicago Olympic Committee and will stand to gain monetarily from Chicago getting the Olympics.

I also remember telling you people he was as crooked as Lake Shore Drive and alot of members arguing with me about what a difference he will make. Any one care to reevaluate their opinions now.

I just heard Michelle & Valerie the slum lord friend of Rezko & Jones will represent the President till he arrives .

I think Michelle should try to get the Breeders Crown at Arlington on her next quest to help Chicago .

She could get two things done at the same time one get the breeders races at Arlington and the other to get a dental check up at the track !

You think she still shops at K Mart ?

                                               RTP

If the Olympic committee investigates Valerie for sure there won't be any Chicago Olympics .  Please Investigate

Phil,

The trip to Denmark just by Barack Obama is going to cost us $1.2 MILLION DOLLARS just in fuel just for Air Force One and put a million poinds of carbon emmissions into the air.

That is just for Barack.

For some reason, they felt they needed to fly Michelle and Valerie Jarrett to Denmark ahead of time on military jets. How much does that cost?

How much money do Valerie Jarrett and David Axelrod personally stand to make from Chicago getting the Olympics?

These people fly under extremely tight security.  It's just the way it is.  I watched a television program with Brian Williams where President Barack Hussein Obama rode a limo to burgerville for burgers.  It wasn't your typical walk around the park.

Rev. Pat's murmuring prayers about people with bad feet.  I hear his murmurings from up the stairwell.  Of course when Rev. Pat gets bad feet he presents his Medicare card at the hospital door like the rest of seniors on Medicare and sees a doctor.

Is Rev. Pat smarter than a 5th grader. (if you've seen the show, good question)

If a public option is good enough for Republican Congressional reps and senators, what is it that makes it not good for their constituents?

EVERYTHING cost a TON of money today, in absolute numbers.  A rice cooker in Tokyo must cost 3 Billion yen.

The question still remains: Who is paying for this?

That $1.2 million just covers Air Force One. What about the cost to fly Michelle, Valerie Jarrett and Oprah on that 727 and the other suppoorting aircraft that is required to travel with BOTH parties?

Air Force One is a flying command and control battle station like  Darth Vader. Don't you know that Bob?
