Very sad :

"Sportsman's Park, a horse-racing facility that has been closed since 2003, will be demolished to make way for a shopping center.

Town officials this week awarded two contracts totaling $1.5 million to N.F. Demolition of Cicero and JABCO Industrial Services of Chicago Heights to do the work."

For what? to have an antiquated horse track, turned car track turned horse track? That place may have hosted some of the best horses and great purses A LONG TIME AGO..... but get over it. That place was a shithole of the first order and was basically under "control" of a few, if you know what I mean. I, for one do not/did not/ and will not miss that place.

There's a very nice photo in an advertisment of a young lad fishing in the pond at Sportman's Park in either the 1950 or 1952 X-mas issue of Harness Horse (a month or more away from archival), with the grandstand and stretch in the background.

It's sad what they did to Sportsman's. I originally thought that it could work, but they really screwed it up in the implementation.

/Similar to Bush and the war in Iraq.

No bigger thrill for the blue collar owner than winning a $10,500 Handicap at Sportsman's in 1970 with a crowd of 10,000 plus (women, kids, Race Track Rosie) and newspaper coverage that promoted the sport. You don't know squat about racing if you think there's ever been anything like it in Illinois harness racing history.

Very true - I have great memories of winning a couple stake races in the early 90's.
Rosie, Elanor Flavin & Mike Paradise - and others all there.

Is there really a shopping center there, or just Wirtz's warehouse?

I had hoped someone was able to save that mural, heard someone tried to buy it at one point Sad

Here's a shot I took after the races the spring before it came down.

Mr_Ed so far it's just the warehouse, the shopping center never got off the ground. The Cicero Ave half of the property is still empty, not sure what's planned there.
