Joe Drape put together a list of the 500 worst named horses. It's missing a few I could name, like Acceptable Jill, and Knobgobbler, and Little Chingaso, but Cicero Grimes did make the list, along with some other locals, and they did catch my all time favorite, I Love the Organ. http://therail.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/20/worst-named-horses/

Personally, I hate horses that have one word first names like...Dave or Doug

If fooling the Jockey Club is bad, then "Alpha Kenny Won" has to be one of the worst; I happen to think it's pretty damn clever. Unfortunately, the Jockey Club wised up when the name "Sofa Can Fast" was submitted.
My vote for worst: Jim Danaher and his band of Arky-breds, ALL with the word "Humble" as the first part of the name. You're a pious and religious man, Mr. Danaher -- we get it. How about something different, or at least humorous, like "Humble Pie Us".

If they made "BAD COP NO DONUT" into "BADCOPNODONUT4U", it would have been better.

I don't remember that one, but I distinctly remember Knobgobbler, by Turkey Shoot out of Pearly Mae. That one was a pretty good horse and ran in some national stakes so was on TV a lot, which made it all the more funny.

I thought the great race mare "Go For Wand" had one of the ugliest names of all time. What's wrong with Cicero Grimes?

What's wrong with Cicero Grimes? Beats me, but it's their list. What about the immortal Poodle Skirt?

Earl!! For once I agree with you totally, especially since I gave him that name! The authors are admitted lefties and might be regulars on this board knowing I tend to lean slightly to the right.

I think they were saying that you shouldn't name horses after people, assuming Cicero Grimes is a person.

Cicero Grimes is a great name and a wonderful horse. I remember when he topped my 1st exacta at Sportsman's with Alex's Hot Fudge. I was with a bunch of accountants and one of them kept asking me how I picked horses. I felt like telling him the black arts, but was polite and told him I just looked at the form and tried to figure out the race. It was a lovely day.

Are you telling me that Skyhoofhearted didn't make that list? These guys weren't paying attention to business. I mean, just ask the caller who had to call that horse over and over. It was a funny article.
I can't believe Interesting Prune didn't make it either.

I groomed knobgobbler. He was nice allowance horse but no nationally televised stake horse.

Appreciate the correction. He sure was on TV a lot for an allowance horse! Maybe I watched many more simulcasts back then.

I believe Hoof Hearted was first, then Skyhoofhearted was after. (sounding like guy who ------.)
I've heard so many funny stories of what the callers had to go through. One caller (probably the one you mentioned) had coworkers putting whoopie cusions on his seat.

There used to be a horse running in Chicago called "Puff Of Carb" -- Christine Janks horse, maybe? I damn near died laughing when the late, great Kevin Goemmer called him "Puff Of Crap" in his racecall.

That's classic! Bunch of us used to refer to the horse as that. Even Scott McMannis & John Brokopp had a mutual crackup on that horse when they used to do pre-race analysis at Sportsman's Park in the mid-90's when roamin' John would occasionally come up to the Handicapping Center. I remember Gerry Galitano, when he hosted the replay show, always used to accidently call that horse "Puff The Crab".

Joe Drape put together a list of the 500 worst named horses. Joe Drape would be a great name for someone in the home decorating business. Or perhaps for the guy who comes out and installs the new window treatments.

Iams Bound! We saw him run at Prairie Meadows.
My candidate for worst name is Ock Dubistudine. Where did that come from?
I love the New York Times' racing blog.

"Ach, du bist zu dein", maybe? I think that might mean "You are only for yourself" in German.
Or maybe "Ach, du bist TU dein" which might mean "You do it to yourself"!!!! Oops!

Remember the horse Kokinaras? Last race was in March of 2004. I think Ida Spagnola was the last one to have him, a gelding, by the way.

"Coke-in-our- " OMG -- that's funny. I used to see that name in the program all the time and never made the connection. I always interpreted the pronunciation of the Kok part a bit differently than "Coke", and there might have been some wiggle room for the "ar", too. Once I figured it out, I wondered how any announcer could keep on pronouncing it any differently in the heat of battle.
