I know the purses are low, but what do most trainers charge to train a horse?

The lowest youll probably get is 25 a day Halfway decent trainers charge anywhere from 35 and up a day

If there training at the track I can't believe a trainer could afford to train fore less than 30.00/ day. I'm considering all expenses expect major vet bills. I guess if a trainer was really cheap, a trained could do it for 20.00/day.

I am thinking that in Chicago the price is around 30 to 40 a day.
Out East it is closer to 45 to 60 a day.
It depends on the trainer.

I'm sure that is without all the added goodies, like shoes, vet, lasix, shipping and some even charge for equipment. When they get done with you your ass will whistle in the wind.

Keep in mind the cost of everything in NJ is significantly higher.
Such as:
Hay...$12 per bale
Straw...$8 per bale
Bag of grain...$10 to $16
Insurance rates are higher
Cost of living

That would be WITHOUT vet bills, shoeing, shipping, stall rent, win bonus for the groom, possibly some equipment. |

I recently sold my last horse.I was tired of paying good money for cheap purses.14-1500 a month for what?I look back at my old win pictures and see that not even 10 years ago same class was going for a heck of a lot more.I will sit on the sidelines with my partners and wait for the game to return ::)or maybe look to buying a house and horse on the Jersey shores?  |

I was charging $33/ day back in 1999. How do these trainers make it 6 years later on $30 / day? Trucks are more expensive. Grain is more. I assume vets and blacksmiths are more. The whole thing stinks!
