Indian Blessing barely won last on a speed favoring track at Santa Anita, not knocking her but it leads me to believe her dominace will come to an end soon.

Ex,

You are right. Proud Spell is a super nice filly.

Hey Commander,

Thanks for bringing this up.
Here is my take.Indian Blessing has a race under her belt.On The Poly  Still had a very good number and showed her class by holding on.
I do believe If Saez does not win this race on Spell he will be replaced.

Now there is some speed in this race That will help Proud Spell.
And Spells trainer can do a great job off the lay off.
At 4/5 For Indian Blessing.Im going to bet Proud Spell.
But not too much as she is at a slight disadvantage.
The Dallas Stewart filly Intrigues me a bit.Had some races at Fair Grounds and tightened up.Outta Surfside She is.
Again Im not very confident this race so wager carefully.

Thanks Ex, but I already have my Oaks filly: Backseat Rhythm.

Backstreet Rhythm broke her maiden on the weeds at Belmont, beating Country Star in the process; Country Star came back in her next race as a maiden and won The Alcibiades (Grade I race).

Backstreet Rhythm had no shot of winning her next two -- she isn't a speed filly, so the one-turn mile of the Frizette was no good, and next she bobbled at the break in the BC Juvenile Fillies and made up an absolute ton of ground in the goo at Monmouth to get 3rd to Proud Spell and Indian Blessing.

Word is she has completely filled out and is the perfect athlete. With only one win, she is still NW1X eligible, which she will run sometime at Gulfstream (probably at 10 cents on the dollar), then train up to the Oaks -- no Fairgrounds, no Keeneland, no other messing around.

Battaglia's ML on Backseat Rhythm for Pool I is 20-1. Get some.

I did A bit of research..Not Much But A Bit.
From the things I seen she was a tiny filly. So the filling out part   Is a big plus.

Her female side is very grassy Hence The win at Belmont.
However, I will consider The confidence you have in her and throw a few bucks on her for the oaks.

I like ya Horse so mabey a six pack wager?. Whoever finishes in front of the other in the oaks.If one of the fillies dont run no bet. St Paulie Girl for me.
I dont know if ya are a Hawthorne Guy Or Arlington. But We can collect and meet either at Tims Bar At The Thorne or Jaques bar at Arlington to collect.
Plus it would be pretty cool to talk horses with ya.
Mabey I can get ya to partner with me on my Cape Canaveral yearling....lol

Maybe you'll win some dough betting the Mineshaft H earlier that day.

Looks to be a good betting race.

Fair grounds H 9fT very contentious field draws 9 yo and favorite Better Talk Now. Among others, Baby First 15/1 has a shot.

Well The Spell Is now a bridesmaid 2 times vs Indian Blessing. Both times 2nd.
If ya all read above I said Spell was at a disadvantage in this spot and I was not going to go much wager wise.

I would like to think Spell will be able to beat Blessing down the road. The next matchup will tell the tale.
We shall see.

Thanx For posting Pam.

I watched todays race a few times..And I will say Proud Spell has made me proud off the lay off.
She looked well beaten but made a really impressive move down the lane.
She was running her eyeballs out.
That Indian Blessing is a tuff nut..A Super filly.
If they hook again like I said hopefully next time at the fairgrounds again you might get 5-1 on Spell.
That would be the time to bet.
I would give my left nut to own a filly like her.

Proud Spell closed at 8-1.

Indian Blessing, 4-1.

I put $20 on Backseat Rhythm and got 23-1...not bad but not the 50-1 I was hoping for.

Backseat Rhythm makes her 2008 debut this Friday in Gulfstream Race 7, a 1 1/6 mile allowance on the turf. There will be rain on and off in the Hallandale area this week, but they should stay on the grass.

She had a wide trip but this was a $41,000 allowance. Not sure she is the caliber of Pure Clan, Proud Spell, Indian Blessing or Country Star(yes i know she has beaten Country Star).

She had a wide trip

3 wide first turn, 4 wide backstretch, 6 wide turning for home, chasing ridiculously slow fractions, etc. -- none of those excuses really matter.

I knew she had no chance when I saw the rail set at 72 feet -- that setting favors inside horse that can set the pace or stalk (like the winner did).

Today wasn't necessarily about winning for her. The connections know what she can do, and ever since the BC, it's been all about the Oaks for her, not an allowance race in February.

The question becomes, did she get enough out of today's race (which includes the almost 1/2 extra furlong she ran  Wink ), or does she need another before May 2? When I find out, I'll post.

Proud Spell vs. Indian Blessing.

Who will win?

I asked this question days  ago and nobody replied.

It sounds like Proud Spell will stay a little closer to Indian Blessing so she does not have so much ground to make up in the end. The question is if that will wear her down. I'm not sure so I'm using both in the all stakes pick 4 and pick 5. Either way, it looks to be chalky day at FG.

As I said before If Proud Spell is able to beat Indian Blessing this is the race to do it.

Backseat Rhythm came out of that allowance race just fine. The connections have decided to run her in The Bonnie Miss on Florida Derby day. They also retained a piece of Big Brown, who looked great crushing a "nobody" allowance field this week by open lengths.

A live Derby prospect and a live Oaks prospect -- must be nice!

Backseat Rhythm is the second choice in the Bonnie Miss (Gulfstream Race 9 on Saturday, 3/29) at 3-1. She's kicking down the barn walls, according to the connections.

Uncoupled entry Classy Concern is 15-1 on the morning line, but is only here as a rabbit for Backseat Rhythm.

We'll see what she's made of on Saturday.

She sure wasn't much today. Looked to me like Castellano kept asking and scrubbing on her, and she just wouldn't run.

I'll know more later, but at his point, I've got an Oaks futures bet for sale, at half-price. Very disappointing.

The story on Backseat Rhythm is that she was ovulating Saturday.

I've had it with this trainer Patrick Reynolds -- this would seem to be something pretty basic to watch out for, as a t-bred will not have his or her mind on racing if their body is telling them that it is time to mate. She should have been scratched.

I've already passed the word back that it might be better to have a more professional trainer, like Dutrow, handle this horse. The problem is that the connections are friends with Reynolds, and as you might imagine, it can be difficult to tell a friend that he can't cut it with your horse and you are changing trainers.

Reynolds was interviewed on HRTV Thursday night and all but guaranteed this horse would dominate so I was very surprised she was not more competitive.

I saw that too. When I saw her race, I went into a panic: was she in distress? Was she about to break down?

Female horses are no different than female humans -- their basal temperature increases as ovulation nears. There are other confirming things to look for that I won't go into here.

That she was allowed to run "hot" tells me that the barn didn't even do the most basic things for her on the morning of the race, like take her temperature. Reynolds & Co. have to go -- they are BLOWING a huge chance with a very nice filly.

Thanks for the info.

given their biology is it a good idea to overlook betting the filly and mare contests in the spring, I mean, in favor of the males, all things being equal?

2) at what age do mares stop ovulating, or do they?
