FRANKIE DETTORI WINS BILL SHOEMAKER AWARD AS OUTSTANDING JOCKEY OF BREEDERS’ CUP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Frankie Dettori was the named the fourth recipient of the Bill Shoemaker Award, presented to the outstanding jockey in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, as voted on by the international media covering the event.
The 35-year-old Italian-born Dettori rode two winners Saturday in the 23rd renewal of the Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs, guiding Ouija Board to victory in the Emirates Airline Filly & Mare Turf and Red Rocks in the John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Lord Derby, owner of Ouija Board, accepted the award from Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day at the Sunday Breeders’ Cup Press Breakfast at Churchill Downs on behalf of Dettori, who was traveling to Australia to ride in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
Previous Shoemaker Award winners are Alex Solis in 2003 at Santa Anita, John Velazquez in 2004 at Lone Star Park and Garrett Gomez in 2005 at Belmont Park.
The two victories increased Dettori’s Breeders’ Cup total to six, which is tied for 11th-best in the history of the Championships. His mounts have earned $9,141,910, seventh-best all-time.
