Statement by Greg Avioli, President, Breeders' Cup, Ltd.
While it was a good day operationally and for business, it is tempered by the tragedy of Pine Island's injury. Our sympathies to the Phipps family, Shug McGaughey and everyone involved with the filly. Dinny Phipps and Daisy Phipps are personal friends. It is a very difficult situation for everyone.
In terms of business, we had strong attendance of 75,132 and record Breeders’ Cup common pool handle of $136,726,378, and a great job by our host, Churchill Downs. We had deep, talented fields and amazing performances on the track and the fans responded. The results were strong by any measure.
These horses receive extraordinary care and training and there have been advances in veterinary medicine over the years that allow the doctors to do so much more to save them. Barbaro is a great example of that.
